I have a scar under my chin from having stitches after doing a belly-flop from a swing. We used to play helicopter with the swings, laying on our stomachs and twirling/winding around in circles until you couldn't wind the chain anymore, then lifting our feet and let the swing unfurl. That is how I did the sweet belly-flop maneuver.
Another swing trick was to play (I don't remember what we actually called it), but we would straddle the swing instead of sitting in the seat, and then walk backwards. If there were two people, we would walk backwards away from each other and then lift our legs and crash into each other like those pendulum toys.

We never did the side to side thing.... but we did do the helicopter thing. We also would swing as high and we could then jump off. This is probably why my knees creak when I walk sometimes.

One for the money Two for the show Three to get ready AND Four to GO!!
Then we would jump off the swing, as high as you could get it.

We did the helicopter thing too. We also would stand on the swings and see how high we could go and jump off; not very smart.

When I was a kid, we had the swings with the board seat. My friends and I would ride with one person sitting and one person standing with their feet on either side of the person sitting and facing that person. Both riders would pump until the swing was going as high as you could get it to go. Then the standing person would crouch down and yank the chains together which made the swing spin. It would spin in one direction until the chains were intertwined as high as they could go and then spin the other way to unwind and then intertwine going the other way. So much fun! Even more fun if there were another pair on the swing next to you because then you could also throw your weight toward each other for a kind of battle. Can't do this on one of those new butt scoop swings, but I suppose this kind of thing is why they went to the butt scoops. It's a wonder we didn't kill ourselves.
Also, I have done the belly flop off of a swing more times than I care to think about.

When I think of the foolish things my friends and I did on the school playground swings during recess and lunch, with one teacher on duty for the whole lower elementary kids, I'm surprised we survived. And we did I can remember doing everything listed above. Fun times!!

I remember in elementary school swinging as high as we could and then jump off and land on our feet. I was telling my kids that one time when we were at the park so I decided that I would demonstrate how cool their mom was. So I got on the swing, got nice and high and jumped off. Guess what I didn't land on my feet, I landed with a THUD. I broke my sunglasses and skinned both knees and palms. I have never heard my kids laugh so hard! I guess I am not that cool after all!

The last time I jumped off a swing, I was about 12 or 13 years old. The swing was one of those rubber ones with the S Hooks to hold the seat to the chain. I had on these cute little shorts, kind of like the little running shorts you see today. They had snaps up the side. The opening of the snaps got caught on the S hook, and when I jumped, I just sort of hung there for a moment, like Superman flying, until my shorts ripped up both sides and I landed flat on my face in the sand.
I've never had the desire to jump off a swing since!
We used to do underdoggies, where you'd push someone and then run under the swing. I remember getting kicked in the head on that one as the pusher.
