Hi everyone. I normally post on the NSBR forum, but this time I have a photography question. I have a cannon DSLR camera, but don't know how to use all the features. I usually take all my pics in manual mode. However my DD is graduating high school and I'd like to get some really good pics of her. If you have any tips to share, I'd be so thankful if you would please post them. Also, do you know of any cheap or free photo editing software I can get? I only need basic software, since I won't be doing any fancy editing.

Changing settings won't necessarily affect how "good" your pictures are. If you are shooting in manual mode now, I'm assuming you know how to change settings such as aperture, shutter speed and ISO? If not, I would strongly recommend reading your manual.
Things to watch for, busy backgrounds. Changing your aperture and the distance you are from your daughter and how far she is from the background will help to "blur" those busy backgrounds. Make sure your shutter speed is fast enough to ensure crisp photos. Use open shade if possible, not direct sunlight. Be aware of cutting off tops of heads and hands in pictures. A reflector will help a lot if you have someone who can hold it for you.
For editing, I use lightroom but for years I used picassa.

If you look up Tony Northrup- his web site or youtube they have TONS of videos about picture taking. They also have a book that is like a $10 download. I've learned so much from him and his wife Chelsea. HTH
