DH didn't like them! The horror! I'm going to make them again and add siracha for some heat and see if he'll buy into them this time.

This American has never seen or eaten a funeral sandwiches. At funerals in my mom's family/hometown, we always ate ham sandwiches (sliced baked ham, not deli ham) on white buns with butter. None of those sweet rolls and marinade. Maybe those were poor man's funeral sandwiches? ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg)

How much is 2 sticks of butter? Two sticks of butter is one cup. Or half a pound.

Wow, I have never heard of these as funeral sandwiches! I've made them with turkey and Swiss or provolone, put some cranberry sauce on them, gravy, and glazed them with butter and brown sugar on top. Great way to use up thanksgiving leftovers!

I am American and only know about them from the Peas. Lots of funerals, lunches, but not those sandwiches. Me too!

Wow, I have never heard of these as funeral sandwiches! Me, neither. For the Brits: It's not like it's some du rigueur ritual at American funerals. Sometimes people name their recipes, and then that name sticks among the group that then shares it - like here. This recipe (without the "funeral") was making the rounds in the early 1970s. All the neighbor ladies were making them for "luncheons," and my mom joined the pack. I was so surprised when I first saw the recipe here - a generation later. (The amount of butter flags the recipe's vintage!)

^ ^ Hijack: I forgot to write this: There's a casserole I used to send to people when there was a birth or death in the family. Years later, I learned that one of my neighbors, who had requested the recipe, started making it for the same occasions. When recipients asked HER for the recipe, she titled it "Sacrament Chicken Casserole" - so that's what's it called now for many people around here. (Very Catholic neighborhood.)

Just a note: the marinade that has brown sugar is the best one, in humble opinion. there is another recipe around that doesn't include the brown sugar, and the sandwiches just don't taste quite as good.

Oh, that's what they are called. I've had them but not at a funeral (and was just at one earlier this week.) They are quite yummy. I may have to try and see if DH will eat them.

I halved the recipe, but that is still a 1/2 cup butter, so I actually did a little of a quarter of the sauce and they were still good.

I have made sandwiches with a recipe like that. (especially the turkey and cranberry ) but have never called them 'funeral' sandwiches. That I learned at NSBR.

What can you use instead of ham? I try not to eat pork (see avatar) but would turkey do instead? What does your avatar mean?
