According to the ALS Assocation's homepage, they have raised in excess of $53 million dollars with the ice bucket challenge. Ann

My 10 year old was just challenged last night so we had a discussion on this awful disease before he did it. I worked with a Cardiothoracic surgeon who died of ALS about 10 years ago. It was so sad to see him go from a talented heart surgeon to being in a wheelchair to not being able to communicate in such a short time!!

BeckyTechOh, I understand the frustration - we have our own drought issues here sometimes - I just don't understand wanting others to feel bad about a good thing, you know?

I'm glad that awareness being raised. I'm still surprised when see things like this (courtesy of Facebook):
ALS IS LEUGARIGS DISEASE
It's also known as Lou Garrett's disease - baseball player ________________________________________________
Thank you, Pink Princess. I used your explanation on a Facebook post about the disease.

In my area it is donate $10 if you do it in 24 hours, $100 if you don't. Since many people wouldn't have donated without the challenge, I don't see the iasue. Are there people who aren't donating? Of course, but if the challenged their friend and the friend donates, the charity still has more money than if the slacker didn't dump water on his head.
As for wasting water, we did ours on the grass, but if nothing elae, the water evaporates and continues the water cycle.

I donated a little extra ($20 extra) and so did my stepdad and mom (she donated $100) I guess our extra helped cover for someone who couldn't afford or didn't want to donate.

I believe Native Newyorker was pointing out how ignorant people are, I am pretty confident that SHE knows it is Lou Gerhig's disease, she was just making a point that many people who are participating are completely unaware of what they are participating in. If she had spelled it correctly it would have defeated the purpose of her posting how ignorant people are since she was copying and pasting from someone else's facebook.

In the UK it is known as the MND Ice Bucket Challenge....ALS is known as Motor Neurone Disease here.
It is raising a lot of funds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association charity country wide and has certainly heightened awareness of the disease! So many people would not have really heard of MND before this challenge but there is also an element here, as anywhere, who probably have just jumped on the internet trend bandwagon without donating.

Just spent the weekend camping and out of the 42 people, I was the only one who knew the whole point was to donate something, even if you dump yourself with ice. None of the others donated because of the way it was presented to them, $100 OR ice.

BriganceBrigade.org is an ALS foundation founded by a former athlete I (slightly) knew in college. He was a suitemate of my boyfriend, so our paths would cross frequently. He was always a nice guy, and smart, and went on to play pro football, only to be stricken by this awful disease. It's another possibility for donations. Just wanted to spread the word a little bit in case someone wants to find out more information.

I was a bit surprised that people didn't know who he was. I am a Met fan but The Pride of the Yankees is one of my favorite movies. I became interested in Lou Gehrig's life after seeing the movie when I was in elementary school.
