So call me dumb if you must but, I just don't get it. What does dumping ice water on your head have to do with supporting ALS? I see tons of people doing it on the internet, are they suppose to donate money as well or is dumping the water just suppose to bring awareness to the disease?
I can pretty much guarantee that all those cold wet people are not donating money to the cause.

I think the gist is that you are supposed to donate $100 if you don't do it and $10 if you do. Not everyone is donating, but it's still bringing awareness to the disease and they have gotten way more donations this year than last in the same amount of time. My kids did it and I will be donating also.

I had a same question. I haven't figured out how it's supposed to produce dollars. And also, how does it raise awareness? Now a whole bunch more people know the phrase "ALS" but does any measurably larger group of people know what that means?
Not hating on it--I just don't understand it.

There are more of the ice bucket challenge videos going around from those suffering from ALS. One even shows him taking care of his mom (he's afflicted too). That definitely brings home the seriousness of it as the mother is not able to move much of anything on her own. My teen DD said she watched that one too among others.

My friend said he had to look up what ALS is before he did so I guess it brings awareness and money to the cause.

I can pretty much guarantee that all those cold wet people are not donating money to the cause. Actually a lot of people are donating! So far $23 million has been raised versus just under $2 million last year.

Yesterday afternoon I heard my neighbour five doors down yelling, "Harold! I need your help! Come help me with the ice! It's the ALS ice bucket challenge! Yeah, the ice bucket challenge! For ALS! It's for ALS, Harold! Come'on, I need your help with the ice! It's the ice bucket challenge! For ALS!" and then when she saw another neighbour outside she started yelling, 'Hey! I'm doing the ice bucket challenge! For ALS! Yeah, for ALS! The ice bucket challenge! It's for ALS! Do you know what ALS is?" and then she charged across the street to tell the neighbour all about ALS. So, there certainly is raised awareness on my block about ALS. And I also lived through an entire week's worth of Facebook feeds while sitting in my front yard yesterday in about 5 minutes.

According to the ALS Assocation's homepage, they have raised in excess of $53 million dollars with the ice bucket challenge.

The point of it being an ice bucket/bucket of ice water is so that one can temporarily feel the effects of what it's like to have ALS, because the cold paralyzes you and you sort of involuntarily react to it being poured on you. Last year they raised $64 million for the ENTIRE YEAR and at this point they are over $50 million in donations.

They are pushing $50 million already this year. Over $41 million since the Ice Bucket challenge started. So, while not everyone is donating probably, a lot of people are.

We didn't do the challenge, but it's been fun watching all the celebrities doing it, and motivated me to make a donation .

Our community did something called the "Cold water challenge" about 3 months ago before this Ice water challenge specific to ALS was in the media. With ours you picked a local charity. It was fun just to watch your friends and family get into it. The money was donated to the charities. When it's local and you put a video out there saying you are giving 10 dollars to so and so's charity auction that very night it will get noticed if you didn't.

I still think it would be interesting tosee the true impact of the donations--that is, just how much of that increase is because say, David Beckham and Oprah and Bill Gates participated and donated? I don't think that the general public has increased the funding as much as they claim it has. No way these big names aren't dropping huge bucks.

I'm thinking the very silliness of it is the attraction and why so many are participating. Silly, but for the most part, harmless and it's definitely raised awareness of the disease. My FB newsfeed is full of cold, wet people. lol

My friend said he had to look up what ALS is before he did so I guess it brings awareness and money to the cause. I'm betting a ton of people who took the 'challenge' don't even know what ALS is (and didn't take the time to google it), nevermind the people who only know it's 'Lou Gehrig's Disease' without knowing anything beyond that. And most of the posts I've seen call for the 'challenge' OR the donation, so many people are dumping ice water to avoid paying money. While it may be raising money for ALS, I don't think it's making a huge dent in awareness.

I know many think it is "stupid", but it has raised awareness. My dd has walked the last few years and will again this year for a close friend who lost her dad to ALS. She also has another close friend whose dad died from ALS. My son had a hs friend whose dad was suffering from ALS during those years. It is such a horrendous disease and hopefully these funds will help not only find a cure, but the ALS Foundation was of great support and education for these girls' families.

I think everyone I know who has done the ice bucket challenge has donated $100 even though they dumped the ice water over their heads.
The money that this has raised and the awareness that it has brought to so many who didn't know anything about it or didn't know that ALS and Lou Gehrig's disease are the same thing, have been fantastic!

Well, don't always assume that they are not donating. My DH has worked with a wonderful man for 16 yrs. It was his CEO. He was diagnosed with ALS 7 yrs ago and is still alive. He just retired December 31 to spend time with his family. DH has done the ALS walks and made donations. I also went to school with 2 guys who have now died from this horrible disease. When this challenge came along I thought it was a great way to spread the word. It seems that it is working. My DS did the challenge yesterday and nominated me. I did the ice bucket dump AND I have written a check. We have several people in this town who have ALS so it is not so unknown around here.

The stars are dropping big bucks. I know Alice Cooper donated 10K to the challenge and did the Ice bucket drop on stage at a concert. (My hubby's friend from high school is one of his roadies so we saw his cell phone video.) He challenged Motley Cru and they did the same. They are all challenging other bands etc... I think it's a great way to get the knowledge of the disease out there and to fund raise. The Video of President Bush and Mrs. Bush is adorable! He challenged President Clinton. I think it's awesome! My daughter nominated me 2 days ago so I did it, and then the next day my 10.00 went in the mail. It might not be a lot, but it's what I can do. You get enough of us donating 10.00 and it will make a difference. My Co-worker's Uncle has ALS and it is a horrible horrible disease. He is slowly losing all motor function in his muscles which is making him more and more dependent on others and it is completely humiliating to him. One of the videos out there explains that only 30,000 people in the U.S. suffer from ALS, so big pharma isn't doing much for research because it's not a money making market for them. I just read on the ALS site that they have 1.1 million new donors from July 29- Aug 21.

(August 21, 2014) — As of Thursday, August 21, The ALS Association has received $41.8 million in donations compared to $2.1 million during the same time period last year (July 29 to August 21). These donations have come from existing donors and 739,275 new donors to The Association. -------------------- Almost 750,000 NEW donors is impressive.

I hope it isn't taking away from other charities. That said, it makes the people feel good to be doing something they can record and put online, it lets them show off their bodies, and it's good clean fun. I bet we won't see much of it when the weather gets colder. Except maybe here in Florida where it won't get colder. Dave Grohl's was the best and most entertaining of all: Dave Grohl nods at Carrie
