So my lily is about 9 months old. She's adorable, friendly and well mannered. We've worked on her a lot. She's a Maltese and we take extra care to keep her coat as pristine as possible. This is the weird part- people keep asking to buy her from us!! At first it was funny (and it's happened so often it became a running joke) but now it's upsetting me. I take her in her snoozie to 7-11 for a soda regularly. One time as I was putting her back inside the car some dude knocked on the car door and asked me how much I would take for her. I told him she wasn't for sale and he was just like ok. How about breeding her with my dog? He kept insisting and I finally had to tell him to leave.
This happened again this week. Twice. My sister took her to petsmart to walk around and some dude asked if she was for sale. My other sister took her again for a vet visit and this lady asked her if lily was for sale. The lady offered 2400 for her and she said she would like to breed her. My sister said no. The lady insisted. Then my sister said she's fixed so you can't breed her. The lady told my sister that she wanted her anyway.
I feel that this is insensitive. She's part of my family. She's not a THING. Obviously people want a pet but it's starting to irk me. So, is this weird? Or am I being weird?
Eta: this has happened more than three times obviously but these are just the latest ones.

That is so, so strange. You must have a beutiful dog. We were stopped twice and asked to breed my dog when she was young, but we weren't interested in that nonsense and had her spayed.
I'd be extra careful with her as people will steal dogs. My husband had a dog stolen out of his yard as a teenager, who was also beautiful and well-liked. Is she micro-chipped?

People looking to make a buck on the puppies. Not really "weird", but I wouldn't care for that either. Once I had a guy in town want to buy my dog and he sort of gave me the creeps, kept going on about her being a purebred even though I told him she was from the shelter and had no papers...I was worried for a while that he might steal her if I left her in the yard. I did make sure to tell him she was spayed.

I have a Maltese too. People always comment that she's so cute or ask to pet her. No one has ever asked to buy her or breed her! That's beyond weird. Odd that you've gotten those comments repeatedly. It's rude that these people think you'd give up your pet who is a beloved member of your family to a random stranger for a price, and even ruder that they are insistent after you say no. Keep a close eye on your dog, those people seem crazy enough to try to snatch her away from you!

That is so rude! Like you would spend all that time invested in training your little pup and bonding and loving them to just hand them to a stranger for money? I could see if they asked you for the name of your breeder if they were particularly impressed with her. I had that happen with my Weimaraners when I had them. I carried cards from their breeder just for that purpose because it happened frequently. No one ever asked to buy them though.
I have had a couple of people ask to buy my Maltipoo. I bathe him twice a week, brush him a couple of times a day, and use lots of conditioners on him so that he is extra soft. He always smells awesome too. I mainly do it to minimize the tangling so that it is easier to brush him without having to deal with knots and snarls. He is adorable and has a really cute perky personality, so I can see why people like to come up and pet him, but I am like you, irritated when they ask to buy him. I don't mind anyone asking to pet him, and I really appreciate that they ask first. It is adorable to see a little toddler with him since he is right down at their size. He doesn't jump on children, so I feel safe letting them approach and pet him. Most people think he is a puppy since he is small and very fluffy. He's my family. No one has asked me to breed him yet though. Probably because you shouldn't breed a Maltipoo since they are already a mixture. You are supposed to start with purebred Maltese and Poodle parents and only get that first generation.
You probably already know this, but I will put this out there just in case - never ever leave your dog locked in your car, even for a few minutes. My sister warned me that these dogs have a very high theft value and that people will smash the window and grab your dog and be gone in less than a minute. She had stopped for coffee and since it was slightly raining, she left her little dog in the car - windows properly cracked for ventilation, etc. She was able to see her vehicle while standing in line. She said a man came up to her car and looked in at her dog, then looked around for an owner or to see if anyone was watching, she wasn't sure.
She immediately jumped out of line and ran outside to confront the man. He said he was worried about the dog being left alone in the car. I could see that being valid if it was a warm day, but it wasn't, it was drizzling and cold. She got a bad vibe off the guy and left without getting her coffee because the man made her so uncomfortable. She was relating this to some friends when they told her of the number of small dog thefts that were happening in their area. And not just from your car, but from your yard as well. It is awful. I won't let my dog go in the backyard by himself; I go out with him. I worry about the predatory birds in the area as well as him falling into my pool. He did that once when he was a puppy, poor thing. The water was freezing! I was right there and grabbed him out in seconds, but it makes me cautious about the water with him. I just feel better being able to keep an eye on him and will go outside to do yard work at the same time he is running around.
Have you posted a picture of your little dog yet? I would love to see her.

My sister and I (or only one of us) take her out either for a drive or walk almost daily after work. I hold her the entire time I get down for a soda. The cashiers know her by sight; once my friend went in with her ahead of me and the cashier began questioning her "where did you get that dog because I know that's not your dog." I'm also irritated. She's an inside dog so there's no yard issue.

That's strange that it has happened so often. Once in a blue moon I could see. Dog theft is a huge problem. Either for breeds that can be fighters or just for the resale value. People steal them from backyards in the daytime. I sadly, wouldn't put it past someone to try and grab her from the backseat of the car as ypu are getting in the front.

It's creepy for people to say stuff like that. Our new little parti poodle is cute like that too. Everybody thinks she's a puppy because she's so small and cuddly. I've had a number of people say they would love a dog like her, but no one has offered to buy her (yet).
I really like the comeback about the possibility of buying one of their kids! That's great and gets the point across pretty well.

We have had people try to steal our dog.
One family actually un clipped her from her chain and then tried to get her to follow them. I heard her barking and I called her back, then the kids started screaming. " daddy you said if she followed us we could keep her". What the ever living hell? This all took less than 5 minutes after I put her out. We had people take her out off her backyard.

I think it is very strange and I would keep a super close eye on her! Times are strange and these strangers are obviously too keen on having your dog. You can't be too careful!

It's scary that so many of you have experienced people trying to steal your dogs! And OP; I would be very careful to never let her out of my sight, not even for a second. I can't imagine how stressful this must be.

So, is this weird? Or am I being weird? Honestly, I think it's pretty weird. I could see it if you were showing her at a dog show and another dog owner came up and asked if you could breed your animals together because they are both so perfect. But just random people? Very weird.

I would get cards from a breeder and hand those people one. "There are more just like her here", hand over the card and go about my business.

I have twice been asked if I was interested in breeding my dog. Both times I told the person asking that my dog was fixed. I have been stopped numerous times for people to tell me my dog is adorable and well behaved too. But I have never had anyone try to buy my dog. That is weird.
I have been worried lately because there's been a rash of dog thefts in my area. I have heard they are looking for fighting dogs and I've been a little nervous leaving my dog in the yard. Since she's a pitbull I do worry that she would be taken as a fighting dog. She would make a terrible fighting dog too as she's not aggressive in any way. But I would keep a careful eye on your pup. If she's desirable enough for people to approach you about buying her, I'd worry she'd be the kind of dog that people would want to steal.

That is weird that it happens so often. Keep an eye on her! I have the opposite problem. My Baxter has an underbite and most of the time people comment on how ugly he is! The weird thing they say is "he looks like he is smiling at me". I love him none-the-less. ![]()

I think it's weird my male dog is beautiful and people have stopped me in the street that ask me where bought him and if they could have the adresse of the breeder but nobody never try to buy him for me. Are used to have a Siamese /grey tabby mix that cat was beautiful and one of my neighbor asked me if she could have a kitten from her next litter I had to tell her that it was a male cat and he was castrated .

Just goes to show that backyard breeders are out there and that they make enough of a profit to warrant paying for new breeding dogs. Just take a look at CL's. Every other post is for puppies for a "small" rehoming fee. BoilerUp!! your dog isn't ugly at all! He's a cutie!
