That is, whether a trip gets its own mini album, it's own full sized album or full sized pages in an album with other stuff in it?
First, let me confess, I LOVE mini albums! I have quite a few on hand and can't help but buy a cute one if it catches my eye(I still have no idea how I'm gonna use that darling gold tiny 4x4 Instagram album I had to have!).
We go on quite a few long weekend trips to Sedona, San Diego, camping, etc... a lot of times there is a lot of photos cause we see family members we haven't seen in a while and do so many things in just a few short days. So even though it's not long, I can fill up a simple stories snap album for just one trip. I'm about to start scrapping a Sedona trip and I'm waffling between regular 12x12 pages or a snap album for the trip. I already have 2 previous trips scrapped in smaller albums. I'm torn on what to do.
So how do you decide?

Good question. I've done lots of 8x8 mini albums and I like that size. I used this size for vacations, long weekends away, and camping trips. I've done one 12x12 for a Disney vacation because I had so many pictures and also just because I was so excited to scrap those pictures and didn't want to use anything smaller than 4x6 pictures.
I have pictures from a recent trip to the coast that I'll be scrapping next. I'll either use an 8x8 or 6x8. I have both sizes in my stash but have never used 6x8 before. I guess for me it depends on how many pictures I have of the event or trip or whatever. Once I decide how many pictures I'll be using I'll decide if I want to use the bigger size or not. I prefer not to use pictures smaller than 4x4 or 3x4.
I also have one of those cute little 4x4 albums and haven't used it yet. I love it but haven't decided what pictures to use it for.

All big trips are 12x12. We take tons of pictures. Weekend trips 8x8.

All big trips get their own album 12 x 12. I have one (giant) album of 7 trips to Las Vegas. I love it because my kids go from 5 to 21 in that album. I make mini albums of the same trip for me and do the big albums for my kids.

I would say go with what gives you the most joy. Have enough photos and stories and time to create a full album about this trip? Do it. If you want to make a mini, go for it. But if the trip comes at a time when you have lots of other adventures to scrap, maybe it gets a page or two in an album with the others.
Sometimes I do both: make a trip album--whatever size--then create at least one double 12x12 LO for my album for that season.

I usually make 6x8 albums for my trips, except Disney - I have so many photos that those require 12x12 (a mix of layouts and pocket pages). I wish I could do Disney in a 6x8, but there's just too much. Also, I usually do 1 or more LOs of the trip to put in the yearly album too and include photos in my PL.
I love the 6x8 size! I just wish Simple Stories made their albuns with bigger spines (like their Christmas album or Studio Calico's albums) because mine are always stuffed to the max.
I too am waiting forvthe right inspiration to use my little 4x4 album.

I mostly take longer trips (4+ weeks) so always end up with multiple 12x12 albums but I can imagine if I did shorter trips or returned to the same destinations regularly that I would go with a smaller format album. I usually do a month in review album and include some of my favourite photos from the trip in the appropriate month with an overview of the trip as well as scrapping it more fully in it's own album.

Big trips go into 12x12 albums for me. Admittedly, I haven't taken a big trip in a decade, so I haven't had to worry about it. If I traveled to Disney, or a long trip to another state, or any trip to another country, for sure it would be at least one 12x12 album.
In April I played tourist in my own town for three days. That is just being included in my everyday album (which is 8.5x11). But I didn't stay overnight out of my house. And it wasn't a really bog deal.
I would just do whatever makes you happiest.

I agree with grammadee, you should do whatever brings you joy. I usually let the amount of photos & stories decide the size.

I scrap everything at 12x12. I just prefer that size, and I also take so many photos on vacation that I don't want to cut to a smaller size or limit the number I use. Whether it becomes an album on its own, or part of another album depends on the trip - a weekend away will likely be a page or two/three in my annual album; a week away will be either part of a travel album (I have some for countries we visit often) or an album by itself.

I have one trip/travel album it is a 12x12 and all of our trips go into that one album. This is the only album that I scrapbook chronological and I use a mixture of pocket pages and different sized page protectors. It took me a long time to figure out how I was going to scrapbook my trips, I do not make mini albums and have never made a completed album (my albums are continuing such as Christmas, school, weddings) but after doing a few camping trip layouts I decided to just get in and scrapbook all my trips into the same album.

I don't do "full size" albums ever. So for me it's not too hard of a decision.lol
The majority of my vacation albums are minis. Each trip gets its own album, it's just small. :-) This just works for me as I can easily do a theme, not get bored before I'm done with the album and uses the majority of my pics.
If I take the same trip annually I put all them in an 8x8 or 6x8 using dividers (labeled by destination and date). So each individual trip gets its own lay-outs/coverage but I can really see how the trips/place has changed over the years.
If it was a really special trip, lots of special memories, family I hadn't seen in forever etc I'd consider doing a large 12x12 album.

Thank you girls for all the great input. Your right, I decided to go with my 1st instincts and do a mini of a few of them. Camping is all gonna go in one 12x12 album. San Diego from last year might get it's own mini, or possibly it's own 12x12 album since we go so often! Don't know why I was doubting myself and being so wishy washy!!

I always do a 12x12 sized album for every trip, unless it's for someone that went with us.
If the location where we went is a place we've never been, and we took TONS of photos, I always do a full album. If it's a place we've been before, and we took less pics, I will do 12x12 LO's, and put them in an album. Then, when we go back to the same place, I'll just as them to the same album, with a cover LO for each trip as a separator.

I have a 12x12 album that is just travel and trips - but trips we have done as a family. We did not travel much so the album is full but not overly so. The rest of the photos or duplicates will be scrapped for their individual albums.
Also trips I take by myself just go in their individual albums as well. Someday they may be interested in where I went and what I did.
I like the idea of a mini album for a trip, but I would have to do at least 8x8. My river cruise to Austria and Germany was one very full 12x12 album for each country, but I was able to do a printed photo book for my mom of our trip and it had maybe 20 pages.

I love hearing everyone's process on how they decide about trips being scrapbooked!! Vacations are one of my favorite things to scrap.

I just do whatever I'm in the mood to do. Most travel layouts are 12x12; some are in their own album and some are mixed in with regular layouts. For the majority of our vacations I don't do enough layouts to justify a separate album. I always take tons of photos, but don't feel the need to scrap every single one. I have done few mini albums. Those are mostly Disney trips. 8x8 is absolutely one of my favorite sizes to scrap though. It works well for just one photo per page or several if you crop them or print them in smaller sizes.

I think it's a personal thing... I don't make mini albums so I typically put any travel-type layouts in one of two 12x12 D-ring albums I have for traveling: either Places We Go-- SouthWest (where we live now) or Places we Go-- IL/WI (when we travel back there to visit our families). Even if it's three or four total layouts for the same weekend trip, the layouts will still go in one of those albums. eta: these albums fit with my other albums, which are Home and Family (layouts of the pets, our house, flowers, etc.) and a loose Project Life-type album with random monthly compilation pocket pages.
We don't do 'big' trips typically, but I DO have two 12x12 albums in process that are specifically for a 2 week trip we took to Hawaii a couple years ago; I'm about halfway done with that trip. I did buy directions for making two mini albums from Paper Phenomenon, so I will also make a mini album with tags, flaps, etc. for the 'leftover' type photos and memorabilia from that trip. Other than that, though, I don't scrap in mini albums.
