I just read this article about Costco. Did you know that Costco sold more organic foods last year than Whole Foods? That really surprised me. I have been delighted when I find something organic at Costco, but would have never thought they outsold Whole Foods. There is also a way of shopping at Costco without a membership. Have a friend buy you Costco Cash Cards. They are sold in amounts from $25 to $1,000 and will work to get you in the store too. You just pay with that card. Pretty smart if you are not sure you want to be a Costco member and want to try it out for a while. You could always go in as someone's guest, but with a cash card, you can go on your own. And, for any of you who read my post about having restaurant meals delivered, this article talks about Instacart. I looked, and they operate in my area. It looks like the same sort of idea as the restaurant delivery sites, only for other stores on the list in your area. Delivery can be requested for 1 hour or a few days later. I haven't read enough on it yet, but it also looks like you must order at least $10 as a base amount. They offer an express membership for $99 per year where you get free delivery on 1 hour, 2 hour & scheduled grocery deliveries over $35. Free delivery throughout the year for the $99 fee. That's not bad if you do the majority of your shopping like that. What a boon to people who cannot get out to shop! And you can also choose items from more than one store for a single delivery. Two big ones for me are Costco and PetSmart. I want to read more about this service to see if it would be worth it for me. I can see a service like this being awesome for people to use to send groceries to an elderly relative. You would make sure they had decent food in the house, even if you lived out of state! Here is the article for those of you who want to read it. 14 Costco Facts

I haven't tried instacart yet but I've used Google express and they do delivery from Costco among other retailers. I think it's a minimum of $15 and there's a $5 delivery fee but I've gotten discount codes so I used it and liked it, you can pay for a year membership too, the only problem is you pay delivery fees per store if you don't get a membership and they don't do perishable goods, so no ordering potato salad from Costco :-)

I just checked the Instacart site because I still had it open to read later. They deliver a container of potato salad called Reser's Potato Salad. I don't know if that is the type you are looking for or not. I've never tried it. My mom made the best potato salad I've ever eaten and now I can't eat any other without comparing it to hers.
The first delivery for Instacart is free, so I think I am going to give them a try.

I did know about the organic foods as well as the gift cards.
I always give my dad a Costco gift card for Father's Day so he can shop there on his own as he doesn't have a membership (he lives out of the US for most of the year so wouldn't be worth it).
I think there are some that resent the organic stuff as Costco because it costs more - maybe just a few cents more in some cases but still more.

Don't you have to pay more if you are using a gift card? I have heard that before but not sure if it was true or not.

I have done instacart a couple of times. It is awesome. You can see them shopping- you get a play by play and you pretty much track them like uber. If they can't find a specific item, they will message to ask if their alternative is acceptable. I used it in bad weather and it was worth every cent.

I am at Costco at least once a week - because of their organic offerings. I get spinach, carrots, romaine, bananas, broccoli, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, apples, mangos, avocados, chicken, ground beef, sweet potatoes, and whatever else strikes my fancy. It is so much more affordable!

If you buy more than the value of the gift card, you would need to be prepared to pay the remainder in cash, check, debit or Visa card - Costco does not accept MC or Amex.

I LOVE costco. There is a great documentary about Costco that CNBC did a few years ago called "Costco Craze" that my DH and I watched and found FASCINATING. Costco is the #1 seller of wine in the world! There were a lot of really cool aspects of the company that we learned from watching it. (FYI you can watch it on youtube)

I just read this article about Costco. Did you know that Costco sold more organic foods last year than Whole Foods? That really surprised me. I have been delighted when I find something organic at Costco, but would have never thought they outsold Whole Foods. There are way more Costco locations than Whole Foods. When you take the world wide numbers into consideration. We don't even have a Whole Foods in Alberta and there must a dozen Costco locations.

FYI - It mentioned membership prices going up by $5. I got my renewal and it was $60. I went online to pay, and it was still $55. So, if you want to save $5 check online before you renew!
