DD, her gram and her boyfriend left here today to go to OKC and their flight was diverted to Branson, MO after severe weather and turbulence. When they landed the oxygen masks came down and there was a gas (I'm assuming oxygen) in the cabin.
Branson only flies one small regional airport and they're not equipped for a big jet. Does anyone know what it takes to reset the plane for flight? Will they be waiting for another plane to arrive?
There is also no food at this airport so I hope someone arranges something. Apparently EMTs are there checking people out.
She just updated that Southwest is flying in another plane. What an adventure! I hope her Gram is okay! And it's her boyfriend's first flight, poor guy.

If it was a hard landing, sometimes the masks will drop. If it was all of the masks, they are only supposed to drop in the event of a decompression and you have to use them until the pilot can get the plane down to an altitude where you can breathe without oxygen masks. If the oxygen masks were actually kicking out O2, then the plane will be out of service for awhile. Not fun!

Is it your dd's boyfriend or her gram's boyfriend? Not that it matters, but I couldn't tell from the post. In any event, glad all are safe and they are getting a new plane.

We were back and forth all night with them. The pilot did decide to deploy the oxygen masks during flight and divert the plane to Branson. 3 people were injured, only one ended up at the hospital with non life threatening injuries.
Southwest tried to send another plane which was turned around due to severe weather. The flight crew did everything they could to check on passengers and meet their needs in a tiny airport. Finally another plane came and they arrived in OKC around 2 am. Their original arrival was supposed to be 7 pm Saturday.
DD said they went ahead and drove to her Gram's house where her great grandma had brought over cake and brownies the night before, so they ate 5 am cake! Lol And Gram still wants to go to church because she doesn't trust the assistant teacher to take over her Sunday school class. Ha!
Southwest sent a nice email and a flight voucher with an apology. Still, DD, Gram and the boyfriend are tired, shaken up and all around frazzled.

Why did the pilot deploy the masks? Was he afraid something would happen to the plane before they landed? That would certainly be unnerving to have been on that flight! So glad they're all okay!

The email from Southwest said there was a pressurization issue. Someone on the ground mentioned partial engine failure due to severe turbulence. I'm hoping it was the former and not the latter. Ashley said when the masks dropped, Gram looked at her and asked if this was for real. I have no idea how I'd have reacted in that situation. I was on a flight that went into the path of Hurricane Isabel and while there was a lot of freaking out by the passengers, myself included, if those oxygen masks had dropped, I kind of envision mass chaos.

Thanks for the update- that makes sense, but I'd probably have thought the same thing Gram did! What a stressful flight for everyone!

I guess I would expect the pilots to address everyone over the speaker and confirm that he chose for the masks to drop and to please use them while they addressed the issue but perhaps that would make people panic more??
