Looks like our next move will likely be to the Plano, Texas area. As part of this new transition, we get to take a short trip to see the area. During the months of September-March, when would be the best time to visit? This first visit will just be for a few days, but we'll get to explore a little too.
What should we not miss?
What are good areas to consider living in? I think initially we'll be looking at renting a house before deciding on buying one. Our kids are in college, so it'll just be me & DH (at least in the beginning). We want to be close so DH has no long commute, but in the suburbs probably...the only Texas I've ever seen has been in the airports, so don't really know what to look forward to.
More questions to follow . . .

I live in McKinney, which along with Allen, and Frisco all adjoin Plano to the north and east. Are you with the Toyota group?
All 4 have good school districts, but Plano and Allen have mega high schools while Frisco and McKinney are a bit smaller. Frisco is a booming area, opening up a new high school every 2-3 years. There is new housing construction in Allen, Frisco, and McKinney, all of which are an easy commute to the area where Toyota will be. Frisco and Allen have lots of shopping which is convenient to McKinney as well.
As far as when to come: September and October weather is usually pleasant, although September can be hot. January can be cold, but we have had some unseasonable spring-like weather in January also. March is my least favorite month - tends to be cold and windy, often rainy and still pretty dead.
I love living in McKinney. I am about a mile from the Rayburn tollway and work a part-time job in Plano. It takes me about 15 -20 minutes to get to work. We don't have the traffic congestion where I am, although Central Expy (Hwy 75) has been under construction for years and is a nightmare - I can easily avoid it. My neighborhood is a mix of 1 and 2 story houses - 3 - 5 bedroom on small lots. There is a green space that runs through it with 2 playgrounds. Neighborhood HOA is not terribly expensive and not heavy handed, operates 3 pools for the use of residents. And I love having sidewalks. Where I lived before the neighborhoods did not have them and I had to walk on uneven streets. I love walking in my neighborhood. I can highly recommend McKinney and - assuming you are with Toyota - the commute would be quite easy.
ETA Western McKinney is in the Frisco school district and some parts right along the Rayburn are in Allen. Of the two, my personal preference would be for the Frisco schools, but I don't have children in school so you might have different standards. I substituted in Frisco when I first moved here and was impressed with what I saw.

We're not there any longer, but enjoyed the time. Most of the schools districts mentioned are good, some individual schools rank very high in national rankings, but not all schools do.
With kids out of the house, I'd consider grown-up activities and access to cultural or sporting events. The major league art, music and sports venues are still in downtown Dallas. Freeway access is important. Learn what highways exist vs those with planned construction. It makes a rotten commute if you have to wait five years for promised road! The southern Collin County neighborhoods are more established and have best access. There are some new developments being built among established neighborhoods.
There is a small train system running from Plano to downtown Dallas, North Dallas, DFW airport, etc. When we were there, it spoke volumes about attitudes and openness of communities supporting it vs those declining.
Have fun community shopping!

We live in Frisco and love it. Any of the areas around here are good - Frisco, McKinney, Plano, etc. There are towns that have a smaller town feel also.
Houses move FAST here. So fast that many don't even hit the market. A good house will get dozens of full price offers in the first day. So prepare yourself on areas that you want to look because if you take the time to go home and research, the house will be gone.

. Frisco is a booming area, opening up a new high school every 2-3 years. I think it's moving much faster than that. We have 62 schools now and opened 4-5 this year and are due to open the same number in 2015. I believe I read that they hired 600 new teachers this year. It's the fastest growing school district in the US (not saying if that is good or bad). There are 43,000 students now and it is growing about 3,000 students per year.

Welcome on your soon to be arrival to Texas! I don't live in the areas you mentioned so not much help there but you find a good find. I think anytime is great to visit in the months you mentioned. In September we would likely still be on the warm side but it just depends. We have a pretty lame fall but for us it is welcomed because it is better than triple digits. I know on this side of town we have also seen homes going very quickly and rentals pretty much the same. So if you find something that works you might jump on it. I like Plano. My parents lived there for several years and we sometime hit that area and will go to Frisco and Plano to hit a few favorite stops. Plano is established and has a Whole Foods and Trader Joes! I know there are great parts of McKinney and Frisco I just don't know them as well. We love to go to the old downtown McKinney area and shop and stroll the stores. It is a slower pace and small town feel. The outlets at Allen are nearby and full of hustle and bustle.

I will add one thing about Plano. Unless you are looking for a new house in the $600K range, you aren't likely to find it right in Plano. Plano is pretty well built out, but there are some really nice resales. Most of the new construction will be in Frisco, Allen, and McKinney. There is one new neighborhood under construction that is in Allen, but across the street is Plano, so sometimes it's hard to tell which city you are in. And school districts don't necessarily follow city boundaries.

I live in Allen and grew up in Plano. BF, I had no idea Frisco was still growing that fast. Its been doing that for years!!
I agree that houses move fast here, at least lately. Most of Plano is really nice, but not a ton of new construction anymore.
As far as when to visit - September is still hot. October is usually not bad. Weird winter weather tends to happen in January or February.

We lived in rowlett. It is a very nice area also growing fast as is rockwall, though not next to Plano, near garland. We were very lucky to be very close to fire wheel mall, and the new tollway extension, great schools etc.
We have a house very recently put on the market there (shameless plug lol!) I worked in Dallas while there. I liked frisco also. Plano is a bit more expensive than other areas but is nice and close to many things to see

Thank you all for the awesome information. There's so much to read, think about, look up, do! I think we'll plan our first short trip for end of September/early Oct.
I guess I should've said our kids won't be living with us except for summer/winter break and unless they need to move back home, so we're not concerned about schools in Texas at this time. GrammyJ, your area sounds nice, has what we'd be looking for with community areas, lots of shopping, yay!, (sidewalks a plus) and easy commuting.
The housing market moving so fast will make things harder. We ran into that just before the housing bubble burst in Calif a few years ago. Don't want to do that again, we don't want to buy at peak, but have heard houses in Texas generally holding their value, hopefully true? Ha ha, is there a 'planning your move app?" I think I need one to keep notes on McKinney, Allen, Frisco, Plano, and surrounding areas. Or maybe it would be a 'Know your area' app.
I'd consider grown-up activities and access to cultural or sporting events. The major league art, music and sports venues are still in downtown Dallas. Freeway access is important. Learn what highways exist vs those with planned construction. It makes a rotten commute if you have to wait five years for promised road! DH is definitely interested in all of these.

Whoo hoo for TJ's, I miss regular shopping there probably the most!

I live in McKinney (Frisco school district) and I suspect I might live in the same master planned community as Grammyj64 based on her description but I can't remember if there are 2 pools or 3. One is a man-made beach club. Anyway, I know I live close to Grammyj64. LOL Side note, I don't have a cross wall, nor a dedazzled phone or flip flops.
BurningFeather is right................600 new teachers were hired this year for the Frisco School District. They had to move their new teacher breakfast to a special location to accommodate all of them. Frisco wants to keep the schools smaller rather than having the mega schools. This is the reason for all of the new schools that have been opening. But, you don't have kids in the schools so you don't really care about all of that. LOL However, you probably still want to live in a good school district because it is good for home values and resale.
McKinney is getting a Trader's Joe. I don't remember the time frame that it is going in but it will be at the corner of U.S.75 and ElDorado Pkwy. The spot is already leased. Lots of shopping in the Collin County area.
If you come in October, come see a Dallas Stars game!! Opening night is October 9th so if you come after that, check the schedule.
Are you part of the Toyota move? Do you know where in Plano your DH will be working? If he is part of the Toyota move, he will be in the area around the Dallas North Tollway and Headquarters.
What would you like to know? What are your interests that you might be looking for?

OK, we are not in the same neighborhood, but we are close. I am in Stonebridge. When I first moved to McKinney in 1990, I lived in what was a small neighborhood called Seville Estates. You probably know where that is because it also butts up to part of Eldorado Heights. That house was between Lake Forest and Hardin. When we moved here, the only neighborhoods on the west side were the original ElDorado, Stonebridge (population 1200 at the time) and Seville that was in between the two. We built our current house 8 years ago.

I have lived in Texas since 1983 and one time, a friend said that if we were interested, she would love for us to attend their church with them. Prior to this, I was born and raised in Louisiana. Again, nobody ever asked me about my church. So, every time someone starts saying that you need to be ready for everyone to ask you what church you attend when you move to this area makes me wonder what the heck they are talking about. Sure, there are a lot of churches. I get flyers in the mail, especially around Easter, but nobody ever asks me what church I go to. Maybe all my friends are heathens. LOL I do know a fair number of people that have at least one cross on their wall. Some of them are not particularly religious (not against religion either) but they thought the cross was very pretty.

I lived in Stonebridge ranch (McKinney) before moving to East Texas. The thing about moving to the Plano/Allen/McKinney is traffic. The mistake a lot of people make is to visit on a weekend move out (to where the housing is much cheaper) and have no idea how bad the traffic can be (especially on 75, 121, Custer). So just be aware that area, in general is growing like mad and the traffic can be quite awful. When you visit you might consider the area around Firewheel, which is technically in Garland I believe, but maybe 5-8 minutes down George Bush toll road from Plano. The reason it is a good direction, is that traffic is generally worse in the other direction.
Generally, anywhere in the vicinity is a nice area in terms of housing and amenities!

I live close to your neighborhood! I'm east of Lake Forest and North of McKinney Ranch, right behind the 7-11 on the corner...at least for the time being. We are building a new house in north McKinney. It's amazing to know how many refupeas live in our area. We really need to meet up.
Op; One thing to know about Allen (if you have children or are potentially having children) is that it only has one high school. It is one of the largest (if not the largest) high schools in the country and has a marching band with more than 800 kids. Allen will only ever have one high school (and has a freshman center for 9th graders). My husband and I were considering moving to Allen when we outgrew our house in Plano and I'm so glad we didn't end up moving into Allen because I think one high school for six thousand students is just too big. Frisco has a bunch of high schools (5?) and McKinney currently has 3. McKinney is a great city to live in and doesn't have the huge size and congestion that Plano, Allen and Frisco seem to have. There are smaller cities north of McKinney such as Anna, Melissa, Van Alystyne, Prosper, Celina and Little Elm (nearer to Frisco) that are also growing suburbs that you might consider.
I would stay away from neighborhoods on the east side of the cities of Plano (especially) Allen and McKinney. Most of the neighborhoods on the east side of these cities are lower income with crime, drugs and decaying homes and neighborhoods.
I think in October it might still be a bit hot to visit, November and December are both very nice. Let us know when you plan to come visit, you have a lot of personal tour guides here who can show you around!

I drive by that 7-11 every day, and have church members who live in that same neighborhood. It's funny to think that we might have seen each other at Walmart or Kroger and not have know about our common pea-ness. I agree about Allen for the same reason you do. I think that HS is just too big, and now that they have had the problems with that mega $$ stadium, it makes me think their priorities are more about sports than academics. I don't know that McKinney ISD will need to add another HS, since the outer fringes of the city are in other ISDs (for those non-Texas peas, we have Independent School Districts in Texas, which are virtually unrelated to city or county borders, so you can have an ISD that spans more than one city (Frisco ISD has schools in Plano, Frisco, and McKinney, eg). Not that any of this is of interest to the OP, since she has already said they won't have kids in school. I just find it weirdly interesting. 121 is not too bad of a commute, although it can be congested during rush hour. I would avoid having to commute on 75 or on the Dallas Tollway, as they become gridlocked on a daily basis. The 121 Sam Rayburn Tollway passes very near the area where Toyota will be locating. Did the OP ever say they are with Toyota? I think I assumed that but can't remember if she ever verified my assumption.

Though it has it's own tv studio, radio station, culinary arts dept, amazing music program, IB program, etc... so I think there is money spent on academics as well. We pay over $16,000 a year in property taxes, so I hope so!! i am up and down 75 all day long to Plano. Traffic is bad now with the construction but I don't think it is any worse than other cities we have lived near - LA, New York, Milwaukee, etc. My inlaws just built a house in McKinney and they love it!

Bedazzle your phone, your shirt, and your flip flops and start working on your cross wall. That's all I've got. !!!!?!!! what the ??!! ... okay then. People really do that? Think those will have to wait until way late... like with those boxes that never seem to get unpacked after a move, even after 5 years ... lol.
And yes, Toyota is the reason for the move. Which was a big shock to hear they were moving ... and leaving the awesomeness of the west coast in an area of So Cal that doesn't get boiling hot ever for triple digits and I'm guessing some humidity...
but anyway, now trying not to feel nervous. This first trip is just a guided look-see, we wouldn't be starting that whole move process for another 18 months or so, I don't think.

I am not sure about the other communities but Frisco is full of California natives. You wouldn't feel out of place. And while you will see a fair amount of bling, my experience has been that the cities that are drawing people from other states are far less ... blingy. I've yet to see a cross wall in our neighborhood and I've been in a bunch of homes.
That said, Texas is very different and it seems like people either love it or hate it. We love it and I've only met a couple of transplants who didn't like living here and expressed a desire to return to their home state...other than for family reasons.)
