I have my toes done constantly, for years. I wear flip-flops here in Fl. year round. This afternoon I just about broke my big toe on something in the garage. It scraped the polish off and I saw my natural nail and it was discolored. Like yellow almost, and kind of dried out looking. Is this normal?? or is the place where I get them done just doing a lousy job?? I was shocked to see it, shocked I tell ya! I thought with all the scrubbing and filing and everything they would look *good*.

Nails need to air out! Take polish this winter and suffer it out. They will come back in like they should and then let them go unpolished for a couple weeks here and there. I leave mine bare all winter.

What [HASH]grrlsmom said.
I do not usually have polish on my toes all summer, but I have this year. Mine are even turning slightly yellow from wearing it for the past six months.
I will be letting them breathe come Oct. or Nov.

What they said...and when you do use polish, make sure to use a good base coat before applying color.

Yellow discoloration under polish is totally normal, and the dry appearance could be just from being scraped by the nail. I never have naked toes and haven't for years. I do my own pedis and I moisturize my feet regularly and inspect the nails to make sure they look healthy when I remove my polish. They're is really no need to let them be unpainted unless you have fungus problems.

It is most likely just stained from the polish. Not from a fungus or anything.

I've actually heard that it's an old wives tale that you need to let your nails air out occasionally without polish on them. A lot of polish discolors or stains your nails so it may just be that. I don't really think it sounds abnormal.

No amount of airing out your nails is going to make them less yellow. You have to wait for them to grow out on their own.
If you prefer darker colors on your toes you should ask for a double coating of base, that is what will protect your nails from becoming discolored.

I thought that nails get stained from darker polishes. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I don't believe that nails need to "air out".
My nails sometimes get discoloured from certain shades of nail polish -- I have one particular purple red and one dark blue that make my nails orange. Even when I use a basecoat.

I find a good basecoat helps. I've also noticed less discolouration since I switched to Butter London polish.

That's why I stopped wearing nail polish on my fingernails - it looked like a hideous nicotine stain! (Well the other reason is that I couldn't be bothered maintaining the polish.)
I still wear polish on my toenails year round.

You could try putting some lemon juice on the nail. That will help lighten them. For your fingernails, just dilute some lemon juice in a small bowl and soak them for about 15 minutes.

I paint my own toes and they don't need to air out. Maybe your are dry because you're always in flip flops.

I think the lemon juice thing would be good and I also heard olive oil too. I would "air" them out and use a good nail moisturizer. I would lightly try a white nail buffer block on them. (it is rectangular, each one of the 4 sides is a different smoother/buffer)
