Hey all, this week I bought my first canvas and so excited! I have had fun trying it out. It is different from working on paper so trying to adjust to that.
Do you like using canvas and what do you like or dislike about it?

I recently tried started working on canvas using acrylics, I am not sure if I like it. The surface is so different. I find that if I use a thick gesso my results are better, but you can't get the detail that you can with other mediums.

Love working on canvas. There are so many products you can use on them apart from paint. I`ve recently finished five 8x8in canvases, my favourite was a Beeswax covered Steampunk one. Hope you have fun with your new canvas.

Oh how fun!! I enjoy working on canvas. Love that I can layer many mediums on it from paper, stickers, modeling paste, gelatos....here's one I did recently. My friend was moving out of state so I made her a canvas for hew new craft room... If you click on the image, I think you can see it closer.

I've been playing with canvas as well...but mostly the really cheap ones. I have been sewing directly onto the canvas and it has been interesting. Here is the last one I did-I tea stained the background before I started sewing.

krazykatladyActually, it wasn't hard at all. You can expect the needle to dull a bit, but I was also at times sewing paper to the canvas. I ended up buying really cheap canvases because the weave was a lot looser and the needle went through fairly easily. The other thing I had to keep in mind was the borders of the frame...whatever your design is you have to take into account that you can't go beyond a certain point due to the wooden frame work on the back side. Beyond that? It was fun and I enjoyed playing around with the idea.

I am finished working on my canvas and I will share soon. Yeah, the texture was different. But I got some new gesso and it was so grainy that it changed the texture of my paint and my ability to blend in other mediums. I used Liquitex Basic Gesso. My other Liquitex Gesso I ran out of was not this think and powdery but the company said this particular one is suppose to be toothy. So I gotta get more of the regular one.
Margie- I love you canvas! The bright blues are the picture all are so nice and a great gift.
Anxiousmom- Sewing on a canvas, that is a fun idea too. Very pretty!

Thanks, Kelly! I used up most of my alpha Thickers for the project - love using up some "scraps." LOL! Sewing on canvas - now that is different. Add that extra touch - great project
