My husband thinks I shouldn't have.
My DD and I were sitting in the car at the mall parking lot. Waiting for older DD and friend to finish shopping.
We watched a big pick up truck pull in an hit the cars bumper ahead of him.The family got out, looked at the truck bumper as it was right up against the car bumper. They debated for a minute then walked away leaving the truck still kissing the car.
30 seconds later the truck driver comes back, backs his truck out and moves on spot over. He didn't offer a second glance at the car.
My DD and I can see obvious paint damage.
So I left a note on the damaged cars windshield giving them the lic plate number of the truck and my name and number if needed.
My husband is worried the truck owner will come back first ans remove the note and now have my cell number.

I think you did the right thing, and it wouldn't have occurred to me the other guy would take the note away first, because I am a dolt, I guess.

As someone who has been bumped/hit in a parking lot by some asshole just like that, thank you for doing the right thing. I have a nice big spot of paint damage on my back bumper-the jackass that did it hit my car 3 days after it had been repainted If he didn't glance at the car when he moved the truck, I'll bet he won't glance or get near it on his way out, either.

Your husband is trying to protect you. Let him. What's done is done. Worst case, you might have to change your phone number. I wouldn't have left my number. I would try to report it to security. Most police departments don't take calls to private property.
It was nice of you to leave contact info. If it was me, I'd appreciate it.

I think I would have done the same thing, without even thinking about the truck driver coming back and having my number. Even so, though, if I got harassed by the truck driver, I'd turn it over to the police or change my number.

I've done that exact same thing before, so yes, I think you were right to do it. Not sure if I left my phone number, I may have. People need to take responsibility for their actions, as unpleasant as it may be.

What would "I" do? I'd call the cops and then go inside to have the owner of the car that was hit paged on the intercom. I probably would also have taken a couple photos. I wouldn't have left a note for fear it might be removed. I know for sure I wouldn't have confronted the guy in the truck. He's asshole enough to hit and run I couldn't trust that he wouldn't get aggressive with someone confronting him.
As for what you did do? You did something about it and that's really all I'd expect anyone witnessing a crime to do. Something is always better than nothing.

You did the right thing...who cares if they have your cell number?? Most if not all carriers don't give out your name if someone were to call to see who you are.....

You did the right thing.
A similar situation happened to my husband and I. A Good Samaritan gave us the license plate and make/model and color of the car, we called the police to file a report and they dispatched a car to her home. She didn't deny it and agreed to pay for damage. We did not press charges.

I don't think he can do too much with just a cell number, assuming you didn't put your name down. I'm sure the other vehicle owner will appreciate it.

I would have done the same thing. I saw a similar thing in a parking lot once. I was worried that if I left a note on the 'victims' car, the driver who did the damage would come and take the note away, so I sat there for a little while until the owner of the hit car came back so I could pass the details on to them personally. (If they had taken longer than about 20 minutes I was just going to leave a note.)
I gotta tell ya, it was a bit of a pain though, I was contacted regularly by the insurance company and even had to draw a diagram of what I had seen!

We saw a car at the library hit a parked car and move over...there was obvious scratching so dh waited until that lady left and left a note that said, here its the license plate number of the car that hit you. That way he gave them the info they needed without divulging his phone number

I don't think there's any harm in it, it's not like you left your address. I think it was very nice of you to try to help!

I think you did the right thing. The same thing happened to me at IKEA. And because of the note someone left the guy who hit me was charged with leaving the scene of an accident. The damage was over $2000 because he broke all the clips underneath my vehicle bumper.

I would have left the plate number but not my phone number. I once sat in a parking lot for over an hour waiting to leave a plate number. This guy pulled in with a big truck and hit this car...more than just a bumper nudge. I gave him the stink eye, so he moved to park somewhere else. I moved to follow him. We played that dance around and around. He finally left the parking lot. It's possible that he came back and took the note off after I left. But, I was able to make him uncomfortable for awhile.

Yes. I stopped a guy who backed into a car, made him leave a note, took pictures, and left my own note with his car info, my contact info and what I saw happen. She called later, very thankful.

I would have called the police and/or left a note with the info and my cell number. It wouldn't occur to me that the other driver would come back and remove the note...they just left the scene of an accident, coming back is probably very low on their list of priorities.
