I thought it was going to be about vandalism. A developer did this! I fired a contractor when he cut down the only dogwood tree on a lot we owned to set the temporary power pole. I really have a strong dislike for people who don't value trees.

I am sorry. It's sickening.
We had a gorgeous drive along the creek in town. Old trees that provided lovely shade. The city cut them all down in the interest of "safety." They were thrilled to find, and how they paraded the pictures, one tree that had some interior rot.
Not long after, the state went through another gorgeous country lane. It was basically a tunnel of greenery because of the full grown, old trees on either side of the unlined road. Cut the trees back about 20 feet from each side of the road. There was never any reason given for destroying it.

Horrible! It always amazes me how expendable people think trees are.

We had as company come in a buy a local restaurant who cut down trees so the restaurant would be more visible. The place, which had been pretty popular and had been there for many years, was out of business within the year.
This is the shit businesses that are out to make a buck don't understand and don't care about. It is why we need ordinances on the books.

That's terrible. When I see something like this, I have no doubt the developer knew exactly what he was doing. He probably isn't concerned about paying a fine, just that the city didn't stop the detruction of the trees. We always have protests when cities want to remove trees but some, especially cottonwoods and eucalyptus, can become prone to dropping limbs suddenly and are just too dangerous to let stand.

Terrible. The tree protection rules here have been whittled away over the years. So many beautiful trees gone and with the city being more intensively developed we need more green places, not fewer.

The highway that goes across the river coming into my city use to have beautiful trees. The city or state cut those trees in such a way that they wouldn't get into the power lines. The trees looked like they were leaning one way like a strong had blown them with leaves on only half the trees. They were eventually cut down due to road work.

I have no love for the live oak after being the caretaker and clean up crew of a few in my yard, but that is just irresponsible. Cities especially need all the trees they can get.

Environmental vandals. The developer knew what he was doing by just sending in the tree loppers .and not applying for permission - he would have known that once chopped there is nothing anyone can do. What a coward!

IKEA is opening here this week and they were permitted to remove old growth trees near wetlands so that they could be seen from the highway. So ridiculous.

IKEA is opening here this week and they were permitted to remove old growth trees near wetlands so that they could be seen from the highway. So ridiculous. That is so ridiculous. IKEA has no problems attracting customers. We are so sad here in the Twin Cities. The Emerald Ash borer, an invasive species, is here and thousands of mature Ash trees are coming down. I have a thirty year old ash that shades most of my front yard. I have been paying a tree service to treat it, in the hopes of avoiding an infestation. The guy is Dallas is an ass. I hope they are able to fine him a huge amount.

At worse they will pay a fine - which has probably already been figured into their cost-benefit spreadsheets.
They care about little else.

You need a permit to remove a tree?

You need a permit to remove a tree? In some places and in certain circumstances. Generally it's limited to certain species and/or certain sizes. And yes, having worked to enforce these types of regulations before, it is definitely easier to "apologize" than to get permission. Where I am, that developer would likely have to pay some fines, would have to plant so many replacement trees, and would probably have to make a hefty contribution to the municipal tree protection/replacement fund. He doesn't care, he got what he wanted. So what if he has to plant a bunch of 2" trees in his parking lot, that he'll probably just let die anyway?
