A local artist started painting rocks with cute pictures or inspirational messages and 'hiding' them in popular areas of town - broadway, parks, riverwalk, etc. It has taken off like wildfire with a big facebook group where you post your finds and clues to where you re-hid the rocks. It's almost silly how happy I was when I found one last night at the Salt Life grand opening we went to! It's a really cute idea - now DD, one of my good friend and I are going to get some rocks and paint and do some of our own this weekend. On the FB page a lady posted that she was in Amsterdam and went to the bench where Hazel and Gus sat in the Fault in Our Stars...and found a rock from our city! (you put a label on the back of the rock so people know where to go on FB to see more) Crazy how far that one traveled! Anyway our local paper did an article on it and apparently the artist who started it here had seen it in another city she traveled to and thought it would be a great community effort here. So I was just curious if anyone else has seen this? Here is the rock I found last night My friend is going camping in FL in a couple weeks and is going to take it with her to hide there.

It's huge here, with swaps several times a month. Our Facebook group (some people just follow or collect) has 36,000+ members. I participate but not in the last two months (too busy). Since January I've found 3 rocks, but hidden probably close to 100. ETA: of the 100 I've hidden, maybe 5 have been posted online... I know our kindergarten neighbor found a lot of mine (because she showed off her bag of rocks once) . I like to think kids without Facebook are finding a lot of them because the not being posted part can get frustrating. You have to just set them free, and if they get posted as found it's a bonus Also use a good sealer!

Never heard of it but it's a FABULOUS and fun idea. Happy rock hunting everyone.
ETA: Well, if I'd opened the newspaper I brought back from FL I'd have known all about it. Main article was 'Wakulla Rocks pop up'.

Not that I know of, but my dd and I Have painted rocks to put in our garden and flower pots.
When looking up ideas there are some really talented people, which I am not, but we enjoyed it.
What a cool idea!

There's a Pea who posts on the craft threads, betty, who turned me on to this. My daughter and I do it and leave them at Hampton Beach, NH where we get the rocks we paint. I've started a Facebook group, Beach Rocks, for us!

It's huge here! My sister does it, and we've found 2 in the last month hidden (in plain sight!) at our building.

Our elementary school did it this year, right before spring break. We've gotten reports from several states and also from someplace like Germany.

I posted about these a few years ago since it was popping up in our neighborhood, and a large number of peas considered it graffiti and criminal activity. Since that thread, every time I (continue to) paint a rock, I think about that thread -- maybe there was a communication gap. Maybe people were thinking more about boulders painted in garish colors, like one sometimes sees at college towns. Anyhow -- I do this, I love them, and they are a nice tie in with my Little Free Library where I often find new ones.

I vaguely remember that, and thinking the subject was painting large rocks like boulders.

I saw one tucked into a door handle at the dance recital auditorium yesterday but I didn't touch it. I wondered what it was all about. I'm planning to paint some to put at the cemetery near the wall where my dad's ashes are kept. It's a military cemetery and they don't allow many decorations but they do allow painted rocks.

This sounds fun! If I had a scrap of artistic talent, I would make some. Edit: Here is a website I found thekindnessrocksproject.com/ talking about this

It was big here in my part of the UK last summer, but is less so now. Some 'finders' were taking lots and not leaving any for anyone else, people started making demands of the person running it (she had an anonymous Facebook page) and it all got a bit aggressive. Plus, there was the person who came on the FB page to accuse her of damaging the environment by taking too many rocks. Weirdo.

David's Dot MandalaIf you like those, Have you seen these? www.elspethmclean.com/mandala-stonesShe doesn't give them away though, rightly so IMHO. The ones that people have been leaving here are much simpler.

A friend of mine does it. I think the organization she is affiliated with is Let's Rock America???
I like them. I think it's a fun idea, a little bit of happy in the midst of all the stresses in the world.

My friend does this for fun. She places them at the beaches near her and there are lots of beaches in the area and she has a Facebook group to post where you found it and it's really exciting to see who found one.

Do you take it home with you when you find one or do you hide it again to be found by someone else? My friend who makes them is artistic and she paints amazingly well. I would want to keep it in my garden probably.
