I would leave them there for 24 hours and then I would just get rid of them.
The thought of calling the police most likely would not have come to mind at all.

If it were here, I would not call. Our police don't even come out for car thefts. You report them online. My guess is that they wouldn't even record a pair of jeans you found unless there was a known incident in the neighborhood. Our police department is understaffed.
I'm guessing that every area is different. I once lived in a place where it made news and the police were called because a sandwich was found in a mailbox. In that kind of area it might make sense to report the pants.

I wouldn't call the cops but I wouldn't toss them either. I would put them in a plastic bag and store them somewhere for at least a few months. Call me crazy but what if a crime was committed and there's trace evidence on the pants.
