I have just finished all of LM Montgomery's journals and her biography and have an unnatural curiousity as to what became of her Grandson Cameron MacDonald. The only thing I know is that he was in jail for a short time and that is where he met his father and I wonder why and what happened to him. LM had other grandchildren, but only two she knew and it is easy to see what became of Luella. The only thing I could find was his mother's obituary:
MacDonald, Luella Agnes on Tuesday, April 25, 1995 at the Peel Memorial Hospital, Brampton. Luella Reid in her 84th year of Brampton. Loving mother of Luella Veijalainen of Fonthill and Cameron "Mac" and his wife Verda of New Westminister, B.C. Cherished grandmother of Karem Allen of Ajax. Predeceased by brothers Fraser Reid, Hyatt McClure and Craig Reid. Friends were received at the J.S. Jones and Son Funeral Home, Georgetown, Ontario.
I just wonder why he was in jail and wonder why the biography of LM says that Luella's (Luella was LM's daughter in law and her oldest son's first wife) story is too sad to tell.
Any pea detectives have any mad googling skills I clearly don't have?

This is so fascinating. Anne is my favorite story ever. I have NO idea and now I wonder why Lucy only knew two of her grandchildren.
And not to get too off topic, but I was looking at something with my work team yesterday and Bob Ross (the crazy-haired PBS painter) came up. I googled him and there's not a lot about him. He remarried in 1981 and his wife died in 1991 and he died in 1993, but he had a son with this wife (he had other kids with wife #1, too). What happened to that young boy?!!
So I get why you're curious. Of course, now I am, too!

So I get why you're curious. Of course, now I am, too! She only knew the two because the others were born after she passed away. Luella was 8 when LM died, and I think Cameron was 5 or 6, but LM was so ill the past few years I don't know how much contact she had with either. Her journals are fascinating- they are slowly releasing the complete journals, rather then the "selected" journals, so if you have any interest in reading them make sure you read the complete ones. They aren't as edited, they have more photos and the notes are on the bottom of the page rather then the back of the book, which makes a huge difference. If you are just interested in the biography read the one by Rubio, she is the one who transcribed the journals and had a personal relationship with LM's "good" son, Stuart. She was a fascinating woman and it is fun to make the parallels between her life and her books. She was such a gifted writer her journals read like literature for the most part.

and it is easy to see what became of Luella. What was Luella like? She seemed to be a happy, well adjusted woman. She used to do events related to LM. One thing that stood out to me was that she spoke about the gifts she gave, she said that LM gave very thoughtful and unusual gifts and things that would last. She also said she wasn't really sure what memories she had of her grandmother were from stories she was told or her actual memories. LM loved her grandchildren, but the relationship was difficult because LM was so personally ashamed of her son, Chester's, behavior. He was carrying on with another lady while still married. He actually had another child other woman while still married, but this was after LM passed away. Otherwise I think it is likely that would have killed her. She was very proper and worried about appearances.

Oh, and all opinions stated are mine, based on interviews I have read. I never actually saw Luella V.

This probably won't answer your question, but I happened to have just listened to a podcast about LM Montgomery. It's from The History Chicks. They produce some interesting podcasts. All of them are about women, some well known, and others not so much. It's available on iTunes.

you guys intrigue me whenever you talk about LM Montgomery and her journals. (was it Grinning Cat who talked about her before? like, a year or two ago? or was that about Laura Ingalls Wilder? I can't remember.) anyway, I think I'm finally going to have to find her journals, and/or read a biography about her! And then re-read the Anne books... and that will lead to re-reading all of Louisa May Alcott, and then all of Gene Stratton Porter, and then... I think I have my summer reading list! lol!

Grinning Cat was a huge LM fan and had several trips to PEI to research her. She was going to pm me detailed info about what to do on my trip, but she passed away before she got a chance. I know she had a personal blog, I often wonder if she posted about her trips there. In any event, the journals are long, but fascinating! I was just looking at the epilogue of the bio again and this is what it says about Luella (mother, wife of Chester). -"Luella 's account of the tragedies (accidental death, alcoholism, mental illness, homicide, and suicide) are to terrible to detail. Luella was proud that her daughter became a nurse and spoke of her daughter and grandchildren with great affection. " Curiouser and curiouser. Especially knowing that Cameron had at one point been in jail, but according to the obituary I found he was out and married. Accidental death, homicide and suicide? That is a whole lot to just leave out.

LM Montgomery married Ewen (Ewan) Macdonald. Children- Chester Cameron MacDonald, Stuart Macdonald, Hugh Macdonald (died at birth) Chester married Luella Reid and had Luella V. Macdonald and Cameron Macdonald. They divorced and Chester married Ida Burrell. They had two children together. Totally cannot remember those kids names, and have to run. Will add later. Stuart married after his mother's death and they had 3 children. Kate Macdonald Butler is their youngest and seems to be the one in control of the family rights.

Damn, I will sell you my copy for a mere 249.99! That is crazy! I am glad I have my copy already. I know the prices for the selected journals were inflated as well when I first bought them. I had to buy them out of order and one copy is an ex-library copy because they were out of print when I bought mine. My library has them, you might check there. If you are interested in reading them I would buy the paperback versions of the others before their prices go crazy! I will be in PEI this summer, I wonder if they have copies of the first one?
