I think it's the brand. I wore toric and gas permeable lenses for 20+ years until I had Lasik about 9 years ago. I just tried contacts again last month as my aging eyes need them. The newer, thinner lenses that you can throw away each day REALLY bothered me. The new torics however were fine. I had to try different brands though. I did not end up getting contacts though because they don't have astigmatism/bifocal contacts yet. Darn. I say you probably just need to try a different brand.

I went back to glasses. Contacts just became more uncomfortable over time (and I had worn them since I was 8). I can't think of any of my friends in my age range that are still wearing contact lenses.

I wear Cooper Biofinity toric lenses, have worn them for about 10 years, they are really comfortable for me.
I have worn contacts for 39 years and up until that point I could wear just about anything in my eyes.
If you still want to wear them and aren't ready to wear your glasses all the time (I am not), keep at it and try a few different ones.

I switched to the Air Optix last winter and had quite a hard time adjusting (and I've been wearing contacts for 35 years). They are finally starting to get better, but I am still strongly considering switching to something else.

I cannot stand Air Optix. I tried them a couple years ago.

I think that if you are wearing the right contacts for you, it shouldn't take that long to adjust.
Shouldn't they feel comfortable right from the get go?
