this part of the article was interesting:
While most assumed Trump had made a typo, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said “the president and a small group of people knew exactly what he meant.”
so can we subpoena that small group of people before a Senate or House investigation panel to tell us what Covfefe means?

This made me laugh so hard today. Especially imagining how pissed off Sir Orange of Clementine must be over it. Since he has zero self awareness or sense of humor, it must irritate him no end.

I thought for sure this was real fake news, but it's real real news.

Well this is interesting. I guess this is one case where his seemingly crazy word was legit. Makes Spicer's answer make a whole lot more sense, too.

I can't tell if this is a joke or not.
This is one of those sobering moments where you think, "how the hell did we get here??"

The fact that they took this long to respond and come up with that me think that they don't give the American public a lot of credit

I'm all for it.
Trump doesn't seem to realize that there are laws governing his behavior and actions. Twitter has gotten him into trouble, bigly. He makes tweets as if he's still a private citizen, with no repercussions.
Remember when he went after that union guy? Remember when he went after those businesses? Is this something a president should be doing?
He lacks decorum. His Twitter feed is part of that. It needs to be part of the presidential record so we can have an example of what not to do.
He's also going to get sued for blocking people from his Twitter feed. Since it's an official communications outlet for the WH, he can't really block people from the account. Even if they say mean thins to him and it hurts his feelings.
He should have stayed a private citizen. That way he could keep tweeting, grifting, and making bad business decisions and nobody would really care.

The fact that they took this long to respond and come up with that me think that they don't give the American public a lot of credit This isn't something made up by the Trump administration to explain their boss' typo. Rep Mike Quigley, who introduced the act, is a Democrat. The name was definitely reverse engineered as a little dig at Trump.

Any other persons doing this would be a joke but I wouldn't put anything past the US administration at the moment. Is it really real? It's for real, and I personally think it's a good idea. Our communications have changed. In an era where our president is communicating via Twitter and other means that aren't addressed in existing laws, we need to update the laws. Presidential tweets, etc., should be subject to the same retention policies that other presidential communications are. Congress has a long history of reverse engineering bill name acronyms. The PATRIOT Act wasn't just an accident. (There are endless examples - they do this all the time.) This one's a bit passive-aggressive, but whatever.

There was another one recently that dealt with freedom of information in the people who visit him at mar-a-lago, or something like that. The acronym for that one was also a dig at Trump... I'll see if I can find / remember the name of it, but it also made me laugh out loud when I heard about it on NPR. ETA: I found it! It's the MAR-A-LAGO Act, lol!! The acronym means: Making Access Records Available to Lead American Government Openness Act... the name was definitely made to fit the acronym; it's so awkward it couldn't possibly be otherwise. <snip> "would require the Trump administration to disclose the names of anyone who visits the White House or "any other location at which the President or the Vice President regularly conducts official business." The legislation, introduced in the House and Senate on Friday, calls for the creation of a publicly available database to be updated every 90 days.... <snip> Democrats say the move is necessary after a Whitehouse.gov page featuring visitor access records has said "this page is being updated" ever since Trump took office — and remains unchanged. In addition, they want the public to know who has been visiting Trump’s private club in Florida, known as Mar-a-Lago — the namesake of the bill — because he conducts presidential business there. "He basically moved the office of the presidency," said Richard Painter, the former ethics czar for the George W. Bush administration and vice chair of the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, or CREW. "Under those circumstances, in which taxpayers are paying for you to do government work and for your Secret Service protection, they’re entitled to know what private parties are moving in and out of there."" it was introduced at the end of March 2017, but I don't know what happened to it.

I see it as the bill was already in the works including the acronym, Trump found out about it, got pissed & tweeted about. Everyone thought it was just his crazy speaking & laughed at Spicer's comment that only Trump & a few other people knew what he was referring to (ie the bill that was about to be presented). I think it's at least plausible.
