That is a massive fire. I fear hearing the casualties on the aftermath of this one.

I know it may not be the same but I remember thinking 30000 would probably die in 9/11 before the details came out and many many people would be trampled at Candlestick Park in the Loma Perita Earthquake (which I went through). Fortunately reality was much more kind.
I hope the same is in this case.

Heartbreaking. All the smoke rising up and watching debris fall against the blue sky reminds me a bit of watching the twin towers fall, honestly (not trying to compare or correlate the two events, it's just what came to mind for me).

I hope the same is in this case. Those were my thoughts as well. I remember hearing reports that 20,000 plus casualties were estimated at 9/11 and was so relieved when it was *only* 3000. (I say 'only', obviously it was 3000 too many but you know what I mean.) I hope that there are no deaths in this fire, but looking at the terrifying photos, how could there not be? ETA: Our UK Peas are most likely still asleep, or only just waking to this story.

It is just huge, they had it live on Facebook and I have a hard time comprehending the enormity of the fire, the building just looks engulfed. I am praying for all those there.

The clip with the lights flashing just made me feel so helpless. I can't imagine witnessing this or waking up to the news story and trying to get in touch with loved ones.

I just turned the final page on the book, "A Fall of Marigolds" a few moments ago. The book weaves together the stories of a woman in 1911 who watched people jump to their deaths in the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, and another woman who witnessed people falling to their deaths in the 9/11 attacks. To turn on the TV to see the images of this London inferno is just surreal and horribly sad. My prayers are with all those involved in the fire, as well as those who love them.

I'm very worried, too. It looks absolutely terrifying. I can't imagine how scary it must be for those trying to evacuate.

Waking up to this news, my heart aches for the people involved. Listening to the radio interviews earlier, it was hard to hear people trying to get in touch with family members, a man standing in his back garden watching, covered in ash, again people talking of trying to get there to help.
The UK seems to be going from one tradegy to another at the moment. It's hard.

It's absolutely horrifying. It would seem impossible for there not to be deaths. The entire building was engulfed. It's rare to see something like this, thank goodness. I am feeling horrible about it, for those who got out, for those who didn't, for pets that didn't get out, for loved ones of those who lived there and for the responders.
I haven't seen anything about what might have started the fire, and how was it able to get so out of control?
So, so horrible.

Those 3,000 people were 3,000 mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, etc...your parenthesis just makes me feel like you know it was insensitive but posted it anyway. I hope you realize that your comment can rub a lot of those who were directly affected by September 11th the wrong way, and I know we have a few peas on this board who lost a loved one. That is a pain very much still fresh for a lot of people.

The building is part of a council estate and had a refurb last year at a cost of £10 million, part of a £67 million update of the whole estate. What is hitting me is people saying the fire alarms didn't go off

Residents who escaped and former residents are saying they complained of shoddy construction for years. Apparently only one stairwell?!
I don't know the truth to heir claims, but there is no way anybody can make me believe that building had working sprinklers on every single floor and that every residency was equipped with a fire extinguisher.

Well if nothing can "make you believe" there's no point talking about it, is there? People are still missing, so I'd rather think about them than sit here speculating. There will be an investigation.

Hearing the original estimates, knowing that there were obviously fatalities. Learning later that there were maybe 17,000 fewer deaths than predicted was a weird kind of "relief". There's no win here, just degrees of loss. One is too many. But yes, let's hope it's as few as possible.

Dreadful. Information is still sketchy. Apparently the building was refurbished at a cost of millions a couple of years ago.

All the smoke rising up and watching debris fall against the blue sky reminds me a bit of watching the twin towers fall, honestly (not trying to compare or correlate the two events, it's just what came to mind for me). My husband said the same thing The UK seems to be going from one tradegy to another at the moment. It's hard. I hope the same is in this case. I so hope you're right, but the fact that this was a residential block, in the middle of the night when many would have been sleeping, makes me fear the worst. The smoke was clearly visible from London Bridge, which is about 6 miles away, when I walked across it earlier. (Was trying to add a pic but I keep getting an error message)

Strength to all affected. Reports here (no idea of their veracity) sent a chill up my spine: it is possible the synthetic cladding put all over the outside of the building as part of the refurbishment conducted the flames

Horrific news to wake up to this morning. News is sketchy at the moment my only hope is that fatalities are low. Doesn't help that it happened during the night when most of the residents would have been asleep.
