We are thinking about getting some . We are a family of 3, that includes a 17 yr old dd.
I don't know much about open sit on top, or closed in ones....
Which do you like and why? We are also taking our 10 pound dog with us..
We will only be doing local lakes and streams, beaches that kind of thing. Nothing to serious.

Yes! I just got my first one last week and I'm in love. I got a Hobie bc I wanted the option to pedal when my arms got too tired. I also prefer the sit on top vs inside. Can you demo different styles in your area? I firmly believe in demos.

I LOVE kayaking! But i'm the opposite, I prefer the sit inside ones to the open top. I just find them more stable. And longer is better! the short ones turn side to side a lot more when you paddle. Mine is a 12ft & dh's is a 14. Test your paddle carefully too - the lighter the better. They may not seem that heavy at first, until you're kayaking for a couple hours in strong current. And personally I wear kayaking gloves when I go so I don't end up with blisters

We have some. I have a cheap Pelican kayak and I love it. My dh has a shorter and wider kayak and it's harder to control. I'm another person who likes to wear kayak gloves. And that's just doing lake kayaking. It's so fun and can be great excercise. Wish I could get out more often.

We do! We do fresh-water lake kayaking. The one we've had the longest and will be selling is a two-person inflatable sit-inside model (Sevylor.) We've had it for years. Even though the word "inflatable" sounds less than ideal, these types of kayaks are extremely durable and way easier to transport than hard-shelled ones. We have two other kayaks, one being an ORU we bought used over the winter and were just recently able to test out on the water. It's a one-person, foldable, backpackable kayak. We both really enjoyed its handling on the water, we didn't like its weight or bulk in the backpack (it's not something I would be able to sling around by myself.) We'll be re-selling that one. Most recently, I got a one-person, backpackable, inflatable kayak (Sevylor K-1) at the recommendation of two friends, and I took it out for the first time last week. It is true that because it's shorter, the front end is a bit squirrely until you get the hang of it (took all of 5 minutes) but it was incredibly stable. It's a sit-upon, and I was worried about it being tippy, but in order to have tipped off, I would've had to throw myself off. I'm not going to win any races in it, but I had no problem loading it, setting it up, using it, repacking it, and backpacking it by myself.
Happy 'yaking!

I open-water kayak all the time. I have a sit-in Olde Towne, 12'. It's a bit hard for me to transport alone, so I'm most likely going to get one a bit shorter. Take some time to try a few out, and test your paddles (as mentioned above). Paddles are heavy - and you'll be using them a lot!
Enjoy! It's one of my favorite outdoor activities.

We are a huge kayaking family. My DS 16 has a sit in kayak and prefers it for the speed. It can clearly out run us because it's long and narrow. My youngest DS 12 has a small 8 ft sit on kayak but it's narrow and he can maneuver it through anything. My oldest DS 19 has a paddle board he uses instead of a kayak. He just prefers standing and will only sit when it's calm waters. He takes the paddle board through some serious rapids and completely amazes me.
DH and I both got new kayaks this year. Mine is a Jackson Cruise sit on top in tie die colors, dh's is a Feel Free Lure fishing kayak (sit on top).
We kayak every other weekend and take at least 3 to 4 weekend trips throughout the summer to neighboring states. We have a whole group of couples that go with us now and it's great!
I tried to upload some pictures, but I'm getting errors. I'll try again in a bit!

River - you're so lucky you get to go so often! I only get to go usually a few times a summer, and so far nothing planned yet for this year. I'll have to get on that...

Just a word of caution. Do not kayak with your phone in your pocket. Says someone whose phone lies at the bottom of Lake Tahoe.
Love kayaking especially in Monterey Bay!

We just bought 2 kayaks at Dick's annual memorial day kayak sale. Future beach fusion 10 foot kayak. Only one color was available at that point - blue. But the price was great! We've gone out a couple times and it's a lot of fun. I've been wanting a kayak for several years now (my son is a serious kayaker and claims that it's HIM that has created a kayak boom in our town - it's kinda true lol). I set a goal of losing 25# and I'd get 2 for us. Mission accomplished. (and more).
I enjoy it more than the $20k motorcycle in the garage honestly.

We have been kayaking forever and found paddle boarding and we're loving that now. We're selling our last kayak right now so if you're near Va (lol)...
But yeah if you've got your dog I can see how kayaking is better for you.
Just wanted to say have fun and enjoy!

We have two basic Pelican kayaks that we use on our lake. We see a lot of people using kayaks on the lake. They're fun and at this stage I don't feel like I need anything fancier. Our stand up paddle board gets a lot more use than the kayaks. My kids want us to get another one so they can go out with a friend.

We have a couple of kayaks. I have a 17 yr old son and he loves kayaking. We prefer the sit-in kayaks because it's Florida and there are alligators in every body of water. It just feels a little safer. We have only kayaked nice calm springs around here to see manatees and photograph wildlife no experience with rapids or waves. It sounds a little silly but I really prefer the kayak we have that has a cup holder right in front of me. It comes in handy. I use it for all kinds of things like my glasses, to set the camera lens cover in, etc without dropping stuff down inside the kayak and then fishing around to find again. Have fun!

Kayaks are AWESOME! DH and I bought ours in 1998 from Monterey Bay Kayaks as used rentals. They've got RUDDERS even! I think each one was $700 including the paddles (that come apart into 2 pieces and store INSIDE) and seats and dry bags. Ours are sit on tops and have 2 compartments that we can put the dry bags into. They're perception brand and about 16' long and I would buy these same ones in a heartbeat! 2 kids later, we are looking at adding to our kayaks. I thought about 2 person but then you're tied to going wherever the other person wants to go. DH likes to fish off his. I'm not into that. I prefer to explore. The kids are almost 6 and a year old. The one year old won't be going out on a kayak unless he's riding with us. The 6 year old wants her own and we ALMOST bought the kids one that Costco had on sale for her (it is good for up to 140 lbs so even an adult could use it!). We decided to let her use ours this summer and go from there. Costco always has them in the summer. We started out kayaking on Monterey Bay and Elk Horn Slough. Then moved 3 hours northeast from there. We now kayak on the lakes up here. As far as storage.... we have ours hoisted to the roof in the garage. They're LONG so we couldn't just stack them somewhere. I can't remember where we got them or what they're called. If you're interested I can see if I can find them. For hauling them- we have yakima racks. You can get wheels for the back of the boat so you can just pull them along. The wheels store inside the boat. We don't have wheels and I always wish we would get them! Those suckers are heavy! Have a fun time with whatever you decide to get! They're awesome! eta: quick search found these- this is what we use to keep them up of the ground... www.cabelas.com/product/Cabelas-CanoeKayak-Storage-Hoist-System/1152376.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dkayak%2Bhoist%26x%3D0%26y%3D0%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts&Ntt=kayak+hoist&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products

I am in upstate ny so I do mainly flat water such as lakes, Hudson and Mohawk rivers and getting a thrill going thru the lock system. I prefer the sit in for stability and control. I would suggest asking around for a rental system and try it that way or look to see if any sports stores have "demo" days. The store brings 20-30 different models and brands to a pond or lake and you can try what feels comfortable that way. If your dog is going to go you need to get one with a large open cockpit for it to sit in and most important is a life vest for you and the dog. There are many items to purchase to keep things dry and highly suggested. In the northeast section of the country I would suggest the Eastern Mountain Sports LL Bean Mountain Man Sports for rentals, sales, general info and gear. I prefer these stores as opposed to Dicks etc. Hope this helps and happy kayaking!!! Carol

If you want a beginner kayak and easy/light to load WalMart sells Sun Dolphin Aruba 8' SS Sit-In Kayak for $148 in store. It shows $219 on the link but if you find in store they are $148. There was just the "display" one at our local store for $111. We've had kayaks for years but I just purchased this one for DD for early birthday present. She loves her kayak but wants a smaller, lighter to have in her (first!) apartment she moved into that she can easily load onto her equally little (toyota echo) car. We never did the rapid-type kayaking and just stick to local lakes. It is so peaceful. Kids were probs 8/10 when we got them and it took all of 5 min for them to get used to it. Have fun!

I love kayaking and do it often. We just do ponds, lakes and rivers. I like the sit in ones. I also like a longer kayak, like a 10ft or 12ft. The little 8 ft ones don't feel as stable to me.
We have 4 different kayaks and I like the ones with the larger opening better. It is easier for me to get in and out of with bad knees. We also don't really do rapids so we don't use/need a skirt. We are more just leisurely exploring type kayakers.
I have very basic kayak knowledge though, and this is only my opinion. My friend also has a little Boston terrier that likes to go out with us sometimes, but just around the pond at our camp mostly. We make sure to put a life jacket on her that has a handle on the top so you can scoop her up if she goes over. She just likes to sit between my legs and check things out.
ETA - Stability it pretty important to me so that is something that we paid attention to when purchasing them.

I really don't kayak, but we did a "class" or tour one Saturday with our local parks & rec department. We had the sit in kind with a foot pedal rudder and I felt safe and in control. It was pretty easy going out, but coming back in when the wind changed was quite a workout. templatequeen Do you live in or have an area near by that you can rent them and try out the sit in or sit on style? seaexplore I live in Santa Cruz and work in Monterey. Small world. @scrubologist We are thinking about getting an inflatable to take when we go camping so we can float around on lakes. Nothing serious like ocean or rivers. Good to know you liked the inflatable.

I bought 2 kayaks from Amazon Prime. I tried once, rolled over to the side and seriously thought I was going to drown. Didn't. It turns out the water was only about two feet deep. 😒

We had see-through bottom sit on top kayaks and just sold to buy smaller, lighter sit on tops (very similar to River's). We love kayaking as a family and are very close to the ocean, river and lake and I feel more comfortable on the sit on tops than sit in because I feel trapped in the sit ins. The sit on tops are easier to transport because they are moulded plastic and don't have rudders, we just stack them up in the back of the truck. We bought ours as slightly used from the rental shop at the end of the season.
