I've been working out a lot lately and thought I'd add hula hooping as a bit of a fun way to tone my waist. Well it was fun alright, if picking the hoop up off the floor every few seconds can be classed as fun I used to be able to hula for ages when I worked with kids, that and skipping was how we spent a lot of our time. So Peas can you hula hoop?

I can, but it's not pretty, and not for long.
One of my kids can do it for a really long time and can make it travel up and down their body.

I haven't tried in years. Too afraid of embarrassing myself.
When I was a kid, I was a bit chubby, and kids would tease me when I tried, so I didn't try often.

I haven't tried in decades---unless you count several years ago when I virtually hula hooped via the Wii, LOL!

I hula hooped like mad when I was a kid, my Dad made me an extra large, extra heavy hoop and I mastered it. I bought a wavy hula hoop a couple of years ago to tone up the muscles around my waist, thought muscle tone would help with my back problems. That was a no go. The hoop kept hitting a particular sore spot so I gave up. Since then I have taken up yoga and since you asked, I decided to try again this morning on the patio. Dug out the wavy hoop and had a go. Watched by a fairly bemused dog, I'm delighted to report - I've still got it and more importantly it didn't hurt, at all. YAY

I would be embarrassed to even try. Back in my 20's was the last time I did it. I should get one. Just bending over to pick the thing up off the floor would be good exercise for me!

Nope, never could when I was younger - and I tried, so frustrating.
So I doubt I could do it now either. For some reason I could never get into the zone of the rhythm needed to keep it moving. I used to take a lot of dance classes too, but the hoola hoop defeated me.

I never could .... ever!
Did you know they have weighted ones to help with exercising. No thank you. While my hips are huge, they still can't keep the hoop spinning!

As a kid, I could do it for hours. A few years ago, my dgc were trying to do it (they were quite young) and I told them that I could show them how to do it. Utter failure. Could not do it even once. We all laughed and laughed. 😊

When I was a kid I was never able to hula hoop, which was humiliating to this athletic kid for whom the physical usually came fairly easily. This must have bothered me more than I realized because at some point before my 50th birthday, I decided to learn how to ski...and how to hula hoop. So I can proudly say that I finally learned to ski (after disregarding the "pizza slice feet position" which never made sense to me) and I learned to hula hoop with the help of a gazillion YouTube videos.

There wasn't a good answer for me in the poll, which would be "yes, but badly, not for more than 4-5 turns". DD is much better at it than I am, or than I ever was even when I was young. I could never keep it going like some people can. It amazes me when I see these little kids at DD's school who can keep one going and going with seemingly zero effort, and they're barely moving!

I just got a weighted hula hoop a couple of days ago. It was a Lightning Deal on Amazon and a total spur of the moment purchase. It's only 3 pounds I think. I can hula hoop for days. I find it very soothing for some reason. One of my daughters can't do it at all, I was shocked. I never thought to have her watch a video, her sister and I were no help.

I can still hula hoop quite well. We busted out hula hoops at Bunco not too long ago. Out of 12 middle aged women, only two of us could, though everyone said they could as a kid. Nearly everyone was shocked that they still couldn't.

I have never been able to! My neighbor's daughter would hula hoop with 3 hula hoops and make it look effortless!

With a quality hula-hoop, not a cheap one, I can manage for several minutes without any faltering. I love competing against the kids; they're always so surprised!

I can't. I didn't have one as a kid, but bought for my kids and tried. Makes me curious now if my kids can all hula hoop, lol.

Since I haven't tried in many, many years, I have no idea if I still could or not. At my baby shower, my mom gave me a bunch of little outfits that she had attached to an old fashioned jump rope with clothespins. She said the jump rope was for me to start using after the baby was born to help me get the weight off and get back in shape. I hadn't jumped rope in many years either, but after I had the baby, and after nursing him well, I was able to get a bit of jumping in a few times a day. I was very rusty and it took a while to develop a rhythm, but I got there. I did much better at swimming laps and running in place in the pool. I found if I ran in shoulder-deep water, it supported my giant milk-filled boobs better and wasn't as painful. I think I would have been better with a hula hoop than I was the jump rope. Less painful landing and jiggling.

When I was a child I was sure I was the ONLY kid in the universe who couldn't do it. Guess I wasn't as alone as I thought.

No! I used to be able to go forever when I was a kid, but I tried a few weeks ago and I couldn't manage more than a few seconds. It was pretty bad.

Funny you post this today! Last week I took my not quite 3 yo DGS to a library sponsored event & there were kids playing with hula hoops. I don't think he had ever seen one before and was instantly attracted. He tried it, spinning himself around in circles while holding it. Then he danced the chicken dance while holding it. He was a hoot! I just stood by and shot video of him to show his mama. But I had decided this morning I need to buy one for each of us & teach him how to do it....along with some other "old fashioned" outdoor playground equipment. I adore this child and spoil him every chance I get! I don't remember ever being good at outdoor playground sports as a child but I think I could hula hoop for a moment or two..... We will see how this goes! I'll be 60 in a few months.....
