I got a very random email from a review I left on Yelp 2 years ago. The person is claiming to be the owner and this is what he wrote (location and business name redacted):
This just rubs me the wrong way. Why 2 years after the fact are they responding? Not to mention that if they truly did revamp everything they could state that on their website, which they don't. Not to mention the majority of the reviews on yelp since my visit are 3 stars and under with an overall rating of 2.5 stars. Also, I'm not the only yelper contacted by the 'owner'. Most of the reviews on the place are on the same par as mine, bad food. And if he really gave a shit he would've written when the review was first posted. WDTPT?

If it was close I would go back. If it improved, I would revise my review.

The way I see it, you have 2 choices: a) Ignore the e-mail or
b) Write him back and say that since you can personally verify things have changed, you see no need to change your review. Your review was based on your experience 2 years ago.

If I happened to go back, I'd update as needed. Otherwise, the review stays. People are able to see how long ago the review was made and can also read to see if things have improved since.
I don't respond well to groveling.

I would just ignore the email. If you ever choose to go back, then you might have reason to update your review. Until then though, why would you change it?

I might be tempted to post a follow-up message stating that I stood behind what I posted two years ago and that I had no idea what the current status of the place was. If I didn't mind going back I would state that and if I couldn't be bothered to go back I'd state that too. Yikes. Trying to guilt you into changing your review. I definitely wouldn't do that.

I wouldn't respond. The review, at the time you wrote it, was what you thought. 2 years later doesn't change that. If the owner "really" felt bad, he surely wouldn't have waited a couple years to contact you.

My guess is that business is drying up and he's blaming it on poor/outdated reviews, when in reality I think the general public is smart enough to give more weight to more current reviews, good or bad. He's looking that the wrong place, there's another issues going on that he should be addressing and either doesn't know what it is or is ignoring the problem. I'd ignore the email.

In my opinion if he wanted a better review he could have at least offered you dinner or lunch on him/her the next time you were in town. That's what I was thinking too. If you will be in that town again, tell him you would be willing to try it again if he would give you a free meal. If your meal/service was better, then you would change the review. Otherwise I would totally ignore the email.

A review is based on YOUR experience, not on what the owner thinks you should say. Even if you go back and have a totally different experience, I wouldn't change the review. I might write a new one if it had improved.
When I look at online reviews, I look at recent ones anyway. I think the owner is way off on this one.

I too think business is drying up, he seems to be making an effort to change reviews in the past 6-9 mos it seems. And to be honest, I don't think I'd go back even if he offered me a free meal, even my bottomless pit of a daughter who eats everything in sight complained about the horrible food.

Let the review stand as is. If he's turned the place around like he says, the positive reviews will be pouring in shortly, and no one will give yours a second thought. Don't change a thing.

I don't pay attention to bad reviews that are more than 6 month old. 2 years is way to long to be seeking corrective action. I'd just ignore it.

I would ignore it. The only way I would change it would be if I revisited and thought it was improved.
I don't tend to give too much thought to reviews that old when I am looking at them anyway, so your review isn't probably being viewed too much anyway.

I would not change the review either. People reading it should be looking at the date and taking that into consideration.

I wouldn't change it. And I only look at reviews in the last 6 months or so when I am looking at reviews unless they are bad all the way back 2 years. I figure things change in 6 months.

I agree with the other posters that you should just ignore the email. My guess is that many negative reviews are bringing the average down. I generally look at only places wit 4 or more stars. So it wouldn't matter how old the review is because I'm not clicking on that listing to take it into account one way or another.
