I am GOOD at what I do. Admin Assistant. I am loyal. I know Microsoft apps. I know how to manage calendars and make travel arrangements. Arrange a whole seminar each year for over 100 attorneys/CPAs. Answer phones and ordering supplies.. and all that crap. It's what I do. Done it for 20 years plus. Two jobs I have held (one for 20 years and one for one year) I have been let go due to boss retiring and the other one the company is merging with another company and they already have to many admin people that don't have enough work.
Why is it so hard to find a job? Cause I guess there are a lot of people like me?? Last straw yesterday. I applied to at least get a job at Target as a cashier. I worked there before and was a good employee as well. (I did a part time seasonal stint) I also worked at Hobby Lobby before I was an Admin. I got a reject email from Target. Can it get any worse? Yesterday was my day to just let it all out.. Cried all day. Oh add to insult.. got two rejects.. another one was a patient representative at the hospital.. (I think that job was just checking in patients)..It didn't require much. Although I have no hospital/medical background.
But really? Target? Just shoot me now. I don't know how much longer I can take this. I don't know how much longer I can juggle the bills. I am just tired and worn out. I'm close to 50 and I shouldn't be in this shape at this time of my life.

I am so sorry. I have no advice as I have not worked in any type of office atmosphere in many many years so I cannot give you any advice.
But I do hope something that is just the right fit for you comes along!

Apply to one of those staffing companies. It will get you over the hump and you will find out where the jobs are.

I am so sorry that you are going through this. I live in fear of being in the position that you are in now - I know that is not helpful - but just know, I am extremely sympathetic to your situation
My sister-in-law is looking for a job right now as well. She is in her late 50s and her company has cut her hours and likely will be closing its doors soon. She told me that she and her husband were barely making it on the hours she was working, and there is no way they can make ends meet on less. She has sent out many, many resumes and completed more applications that she can keep track of, and it is rejection after rejection. On Friday she did finally receive a positive email that contained a task that a potential employer asked that she complete within two business days in order for her to move on to the next phase. Hopefully that will work out for her.

I am so sorry. Target is probably full due to college kids being home and applying for summer jobs; don't take it personally - I'm sure it's just a numbers game.
Good luck finding something new.

I'm so sorry. Job hunting can be so demoralizing. It doesn't take the sting out of this, but it may be possible that Target felt you were overqualified.
It's a dog eat dog corporate world. Companies would rather save fifty cents an hour than to pay someone who will cost them more up front but less in the long run.
Sending you huge hugs.

I'm sorry you are going through this.
I believe that when Target isn't hiring, they send an automated, standard rejection email out. My kids both applied a couple weeks ago and immediately got it. So did their friends who applied. Don't take it personal.
I agree with another poster, go to a staffing company. Even if they place you in a temp position, you can look and earn money too.

I'm sorry. Hang in there. Feeling like constant treading water and someone is pouring buckets over your head sucks. Be extra gentle with yourself.

I am so sorry you are having such a hard time. Lots of hugs to you!! I hope things turn around and you find a job very soon!!
I haven't worked since February. My CHF got so bad that my Dr. told me I couldn't work and to apply for SSDI. I applied in March and was approved in May. But I won't get anything until September. DH works but it just barely covers the bills. It is so hard and I cry every day. I don't know how we will make it two more months. It is either pay bills or buy groceries. Can't have both some weeks. And on top of all that, we have a medical bills totaling over $300,00 for my emergency surgery. I keep praying and trusting in God. He has gotten us so far and I know He will take care of us in the future.

Yeah I am going to call a staffing agency tomorrow and see what that entails.. at least maybe I can get something to keep money coming in.
I saw Target on Indeed looking for help so that is why I tried there and since I worked there previously and know how to do the job.. but I don't know what the HR person did when I quit a few years ago. I went to them to cut my hours a little bit because I was drawing unemployment at the same time and I couldn't work over 32 hours (and they knew this when they hired me).. I was right on the line.. she got all snippy and said well you don't have to work here and I tried to reason with her and she wouldn't hear of it. So she could have put something in my file saying not to rehire her??

I'm so sorry.
I agree that you should check into a staffing/temp agency. We hire most of our admins by hiring them as temps, then keeping them if they work out.

I'm sorry, my heart hurts for you. What part of the world are you in? Maybe someone here has a connection for you.
Also, when I was single, I started working for a company called West. We took inbound calls in our house. It wasn't amazing pay, but it did pay all my bills for a year and then I found an even better paying job with the skills I gained there. Maybe just something you can do temporarily until you find the right thing.

My DH works part time for target and we've seen even his meager hours cut. It's got to be all the college kids coming home and ramping up to full time.
and I'm sorry you're going through this and I feel your pain. we've BTDT more than once, the last time was for a full year of unemployment for DH. It was, hands down, the worst year of my life. I agree with the temp agency, they will at least get you working so you can get something coming in while you look for a more permanent position.

i'm sorry it's so tough out there. i have a friend who has been out of work for 2 years. she was making $125,000 a year doing licensing for a major fashion label but then they downsized. in those two years, she has applied for every job out there down and have been turned down for everything. she finally found a job working admin in an appliance warehouse making $15.00/hour. she feels dejected but i think it's better than nothing and it's a good opportunity to lean new job skills.

Have you considered working in a school? This set of skills would be ideal for a school secretary, registrar, office or records manager. I work in a very large system but we have those roles open constantly and are hiring numerous roles at this time.

I am so sorry. I used staffing agencies to find all my admin jobs during my break from teaching. It was great as long as you didn't need benefits. And many are temp-to-hire, so then you get benefits after your 90 days or whatever are up.

that has to be extremely disheartening, I would definitely contact staffing agencies-they often have exactly those types of jobs, and many companies prefer hiring a temp and making sure the person will work out, before offering them a job. tons of jobs never even make it to job boards because of this, they want a temp they can hire permanently
I hope you find something really good soon

I don't know what state you live in but www.governmentjobs.com/ has an administrative section along with other sections that might help. I have seen admin position posted for colleges before, however, I know this depends on what state you live in. Sending you hugs.

Former recruiter and recruiting manager here. I would register w/at least 3 staffing agencies. It enables you to test drive different companies and if you're doing a great job you will often find yourself w/offers. Don't register w/just one. Often, they share the same clients, but that's OK. You need to work and the best way to do so is to make those contacts while temping. Plus, you do find temp to full time positions that you won't find otherwise.
Tips for getting placed with a temp agency: Dress in your most business-like attire. Be really professional and have a great attitude. You have lots of experience w/MS office, so you should easily score well on your tests. Have 3 references ready to go when you go in for your appointment. If a candidate did the things listed here we would happy dance w/glee because it made them so easy to place. One last thing, don't cowtow to a low wage. Stand up for a realistic wage for someone w/your experience and skills. Sometimes they will lowball you and when you go into a job you must assume that you'll never get a raise. Always start a job w/a wage that is comfortable for you.
Don't despair. Get busy w/the agencies.

workingclassdog Are you involved with the unemployment office in your state? If so, use their resources to help with checking for jobs that only they get, resume/application tips/help and support. They hear it every day and work with it so offen that they have great answers!

Have you considered working in a school? This set of skills would be ideal for a school secretary, registrar, office or records manager. I work in a very large system but we have those roles open constantly and are hiring numerous roles at this time. So funny you brought this up. I did work for a school between the long term job and the one I am at now. I was the Registrar. And I got fired. (I really sound pathetic don't I?) Long story but I complained about a co-worker one day after trying so hard to ignore her behavior for months (on the phone with personal problems at least an hour a day, talking about parents and staff behind their backs, even the principal, not business like at all) the next day, I am the one that got fired. (not that I wanted her fired)... because I made a mistake in booking a bus for a field trip. The trip worked out but still I made the mistake. Funny the girl that got hired after me (she is very nice and I have talked to her a lot), had much less responsibility than I did. Got her own office, didn't have to answer phones, didn't have to greet all the parents and kids who came up to the front window, didn't have to do the newsletter and didn't have to sit next to Ms. Personal Problem all day long listening to her stories over and over again. I probably would have done the job MUCH better if I had all that! I really did love that job and was heartbroken when it happened. Good thing out of it, the director (principal) said if there was ever another job similar to open up that I would be welcome back.. of course that hasn't happened.

I agree about the temp agency. I work for a hospital and I know that we hire from temp agencies for some of the check-in /representatives/ floor admin type postitions at times. Some end up becoming full hospital employees and it also gets your foot in the door when it comes to other internal jobs.
I am so sorry that you are having to deal with this. I wish you luck, a great job soon, and perseverance to get over this bump in the road.

I ditto the temp agency suggestion. My mother in law retired a few years back but found she was bored not working. She signed up with account temps and pretty much works all the time. She likes doing the short term jobs and then having a week or so off in between to travel or veg. She makes decent wages and right now only work 4 days a week. Account Temps always seems to have jobs for her.
Definitely worth checking into. Hope you find something soon.

I have an older friend who lost her job in HR due to her company downsizing because of lost contracts. She has been frustrated in her attempts to find something as well despite having all kinds of office skills.
I'll cross my fingers for you that something turns up soon.
