For the past little while, I've thought how cool it would be to work in the props department of a movie studio. I find myself looking at the background and all of the knick-knack type things rather than following the story!!
There is a movie studio near my house and I'm thinking of researching it to see about applying. I have no background in it but I'd be willing to be a grunt!! Anyone have any tips or advice for me?

That sounds interesting! Have you thought about working in theater? That might be a good way to get some experience, there's lots of different community theaters, churches etc. that do productions.

My cousins work in the business one is almost always working but that means he is traveling as most filming isn't done in Hollywood any more. The other cousin struggles to find enough work.
Good luck it sounds like a lot of fun.

Not me, but I did get to take a tour of the wardrobe department at Fox over the summer. It was very interesting! If I lived in the area I would want to work there! Good luck!

My DD goes to Film School at UNCSA. She will graduate with a BA in Film Studies with a minor, probably in Producing. They have a whole "art department" there where the film students learn to do exactly this. It is part of their film studies. So you might be competing against kids/adults with that type of background. But it can't hurt to apply. Those positions are usually for the freshman and do tend to be "grunt" positions. Lots of hard work for little/no pay (interns and students tend to work for free just to get the experience). For example DD worked on 6 of the Senior Films last year as a freshman....one was a circus tent and another was a firecracker stand. They were cool and they built them from scratch. Lots of hours (I think she clocked over 240 hours her first semester)

Another suggestion to look for local community theater groups. I've been active in our community theater for the past 24 years. Love it.
I've done everything from props to costumes to running the light board to being Vice President. There's no pay but it's a great way to learn some skills and get a feel for it.
Since most community theaters are on a volunteer basis, they are always looking for people to help out. I've met the most wonderful people and have learned so much.
You never know, if there are community theaters in your area, they may have connections to the place you're interested in working at!

My doctor's daughter works in costume design. He told me 'i couldn't believe someone could make money after studying fine arts at university. Boy did she prove me wrong!' so apparently she is doing very well for herself. I am surprised she didn't go into acting herself. She has the personality and body for it. We used to dance together and go to the same school a hundred years ago LOL.
