... what would the platform be?
I would want it to be:
-supportive of healthcare for all, whether through single payer care like Canada or a public option like Germany. I'm not surethe NHS style like Great Britain would work here but we should take a serious look at it too.
-LGTBQ have the same rights as all American citizens and are a protected class.
- Continued freedom of religion and separation of church and state. Churches should not be forced to perform gay marriage, etc. but will lose their tax exemption if they become political as in endorsing candidates or referendums from the pulpit. No prayer in public schools or only Christian iconography. If someone wants a nativity on the courthouse lawn at Christmas, fine but a Menorah, etc also has to be allowed if requested.
-Complete support of Public education. If someone wants to send their child to private school, fine but they do it on their own dime. I would like to see money put into schools that are failing, proper regulation of charter schools (and home schools if that's lacking). Let's get creative in getting parents involved in their kid's education. Bring down the cost of college tuition but also encourage trade schools and apprenticeships. Not everyone wants to or can be a doctor or lawyer. Besides, they'd probably make better money as a plumber or welder.
-we have to prepare our society for the jobs and technology of tomorrow. I don't know what that will look like but we can't keep burying our heads in the sand that it's EPA regulations not automation that's killing jobs in America. Let's quit promising coal miners they'll go back to the mines and retrain them.
-I fully support a woman's right to choose and we cannot take access to women's healthcare (ie Planned Parenthood) away. I want to see us push sex education and access to birth control as the way to reduce abortion rather than removing choice and access which only leads to more women dying. I also support programs to assist those with unplanned pregnancy keep the child by providing income assistance, housing, job training and childcare.
-paid maternity leave.
-a full audit of the Defense Department
-a balanced budget
-progressive taxation that requires corporations and wealthy individuals to all pay their fair share
-humane immigration laws that allow for more guest worker visas and an easier, less expensive path to residency/citizenship. If you commit a violent felony crime sayonara.
-reformation of campaign finance laws and reversal of Citizens United
-a 2 month election season by law. No more 4 years of campaigning.
-Congressman required to hold a minimum of one public town hall prior to passage of important legislation and a minimum number throughout the year.
-ultimately I would like see the third party act more like swing votes. Sometimes they vote with Republicans sometimes with Democrats to bring our government closer to the center rather than the fringes where it's currently at.
I have more but I'm curious what everyone else has to say.
