Hi Peas. So my daughter is moving to Kansas in 1 month (Eck!) to complete her senior year of high school. I want to send her host family a gift. They said they like boardgames, so I thought I'd send the New Zealand version of Monopoly. Is this naff? Most people already own Monopoly. Would you want another version?
Any ideas what you'd want from New Zealand. I don't have millions of dollars. Thanx in advance.

I think that's a great idea. Not the usual hostess gift at all. But you might want to include some snacks or delicacies specific to NZ for them to try while gaming as well. Do you have any unusual chip or popcorn flavors? I know she'll get care packages from you, but maybe some things for them she might not like but represent the area?

We gave my host families these Inuit carvings from the Canadian Pavilion at Expo 86. It was not smoked salmon and that was what they wanted. I say go with Monopoly.

I think it's perfect!!
It's something that represents New Zealand, but is also relatable to them.

DD is already buying snack foods for the family. I was involved in a candy swap on the old NSBR. It was fun. I enjoyed eating your candies.

I'd love that. That's a really fun way to bring some of your dd's culture to her host family. Combining that Monopoly game w/food will be a hit!

monopoly is good.. racoon mittens or scarf.or socks calendar (if any are around).. some chocolate bars from whittakers.. esp some of the wilder flavors. something with the all blacks --tshirt. a small stuffed kiwi. coffee mug. kitchen towels. small nz cookbook. something small out of kauri wood.
I have been exchanging small gifts with my dd's future inlaws.. so that are some things I like.

I think it's a nice gift even if we wouldn't necessarily play monopoly. You can still look at it and admire it and learn from it and set it out as a neat conversation piece on your coffee table.

I really wanted to send feijoa vodka. Feijoa is a fruit we have here. But DD is a minor so I couldn't do that.

I would also love a good New Zealand cook book - bonus for pretty photos. One of my favorite ways to learn about other countries is through the food.

Yes, I think that is a really fun idea. How many American families could say that they had a Monopoly game from New Zealand?

I'd love to receive a NZ version of Monopoly! I think popular chocolate bars, candy or chips are also great ideas. A humor book translating NZ slang for tourists could also be fun. I'm not sure that exists, but a slang translation book was one of the most popular things I took to France years ago. ETA As mentioned already, a cookbook is another fabulous idea.

Well, this Kansan brought home a UK Monopoly from a semester in England, but I didn't already have one. Do you have a typically NZ game that isn't played a lot of other places? If a visitor was coming to see me, I think I'd like a sample of typical NZ snacks/candies, especially if you have a classic flavor that isn't common here (like prawn chips and chocolate/orange combination of flavors from the UK). If there are kids in the family, maybe they'd like children's books from NZ, or NZ versions of something like Harry Potter or whatever they might be into. It's so nice of you to be thinking ahead for a gift, but your DD might be better able to guess what they'd like after she's been with them for a little while.

We have 2 versions of Monopoly, and we will pretty much play any version anyone else has as well. We were just playing a dog version recently at a friend's house. It's fun to play with the different themes.

Yes,yes, yes. Anyone who enjoys board games likely has Monopoly, and anyone who likes Monopoly would enjoy a different version. It's a great gift.
