We took the opportunity over the long weekend to do a trip to Maine. We've been to the coast multiple times, but except for Baxter State Park (home to Katahdin - the end of the Appalachian Trail and a lot of moose), haven't done as much inland. We went to an area called Rangeley Lakes in the western part of the state, not too far from both the New Hampshire and Canadian borders. First time there and we'll definitely be back. Paradise for those who love the outdoors - lots of mountains and lakes and not overdeveloped and not a lot of people (I think we saw the same amount of people on the trails in four days that we saw in one hour in Acadia NP!).
We did four different hikes and this one was by far our favorite (and we think easily one of the top ten in the Northeast). We hit four peaks in the Bigelow range (all on the Appalachian Trail) and the views were just fantastic. It was a long day (the hike was nearly 14 miles with 4000 feet elevation gain), but well worth it. It poured the day before, so we got lucky with a beautiful weather day.
We did a shorter hike the following day, taking the direct route up a ski slope to the summit. We didn't know there were huge lupine fields at this mountain, so that was a nice surprise (and I could not stop taking pictures of them - it was so pretty).
This was the view from our campground on Flagstaff Lake. The mountains on the left and in the middle are the ones we hiked (the ones in the middle are called The Horns, but Norah thought they looked like Pusheen ears).
I know we have some Maine peas here - love your state.
