Getting countries mixed up really shouldn't happen...there are no excuses. BBC

Good grief. While you can imagine Trump neither knowing nor caring what the difference is, surely there has to be someone on the staff who is aware of these details. It's not even just about protocols, it's Foreign Relations 101.

Human error. I can give them a pass on simple human errors like that. They corrected it. Every president and every president's staff have made those types of gaffes.
If they could just get the important stuff right, and THAT simple stuff was all we had to complain about!

Granted it is all small stuff, but if this carelessness is so common it carries over to the important stuff.

I find that that kind of error shows extreme lack of caring and extreme sloppiness.
That memo should have passed before several pairs of eyes, hopefully at least one pair that is knowledgeable, and should have been caught and corrected before being publicly posted.

Some of our Presidential candidates have gotten mixed up while campaigning and called the town they've stopped at by the wrong name.

Some of our Presidential candidates have gotten mixed up while campaigning and called the town they've stopped at by the wrong name. That's understandable - I'm sure one town blurs into another in a situation like that. This was written by someone sitting in a office who's job it is to put out official statements etc. If you're not sure - check your facts otherwise it's just sloppiness and risks insulting other nationalities, world leaders etc.

What we brush off as human error and nothing to get bothered about is probably fine between friends and relations but on a world stage can be viewed as a total insult by other countries/cultures. I am amazed no one picked it up. Everyone makes mistakes and I frequently get my words muddled but I am not likely to cause diplomatic upset by my errors.

Whilst I agree it's human error but someone in the position of issuing statements on behalf of any government should also consider the diplomatic implications of making such serious gaffes, especially in this case, when one has to considering the relationship between Taiwan and mainland China.

Human error. I can give them a pass on simple human errors like that....If they could just get the important stuff right Cool - I hope you apply that school of thought to every other profession.. For example my career (nursing) "whoops I forgot to wash my hands between patients (every one does that sometimes) but now your wound is infected...never mind, the big issue is that with 2 weeks of antibiotics you'll still be alive" or "whoops that doctor wrote up the wrong prescription for your child, but still the bigger issue is that it didn't have any lasting side effects" This isn't some little local business, this is the highest office in the USA, you should expect perfection from them and that they have the details right on every little thing. I would understand is this was said in conversation - I don't expect that everyone will be word perfect in that situation, BUT in written communication, when there is the ability to fact check and to make sure it's correct - then it must to be correct. Overlooking that sloppy attitude in all the little things gives them permission to be equally sloppy in the big things.

If someone had misspoken, I would tend to give it a pass. Our PM missed mentioning one of the provinces during a recent Canada Day speech - it happens.
In a press release, or any other written statement? No - those should be edited by someone who actually knows what they are doing. And, wow, of all of the countries to mix up, this was a doozie.
