Its half off. Why do I need it? And, does it work with our "I" devices?
I would like to start adding in more home automation and I'm wondering if this is the right place to start.

My family use it for the shopping list. You tell Alexa to add something and it goes to your app . Its very handy when you are at the grocery store. We also use the timer quite often. Of course the music is good - especially if you have amazon music playlists. My MIL uses it as her alarm - she likes being woken up by Alec Baldwin

I'm Alexa's biggest fan. She is however not a necessity for life but is an awesome tool. Timers - I just talk Alarms - I just talk Lists - I rarely forget anything because I just say it and it is written to my list Music - I say Alexa, play music - and she does. My kids listen to her ALL the time. Skills - games are fun and I can connect my other devices such as "turn on the lights" Order- I have a standing list of items through Amazon. I tell her to order it, she tells me the price, I get it. I get a notification if it is out for delivery. Contact- I don't use this much but I can call my inlaws during dinner and it is just like they are in the room. I got a second one yesterday because of the price. She will go upstairs and I will call my children down vs. screaming. Ends fights: While her search isn't awesome, she will answer the question during dinner "how old is Meryl Streep" and I win that fight. Ha! Seriously, I love her.

It doesn't seem to work with iDevices. But if you think about it, Apple already has it's own version with Siri. We have the small echo dot. If you aren't sure you will like/need Alexa, I'd start with the Echo model.

My Alexa will connect to my bluetooth on my iPhone and I can use her like a speaker.
I also have the google calendar app that links to my Alexa. I just tell her to add it to the calendar and it all syncs.

The echo speaker is far better quality than the dot

I love her and she now does sync with iPhone calendar. You have to add your iPhone calendar in settings. And yes it connects with iPhone bluetooth for podcasts or music.
I use it all the time to ask weather, add stuff to my shopping list, timer, plus I'm always asking a actors age when I'm watching TV. Like did you know Morgan Freeman is 80 years old? Alexa just told me that.

I'm confused. Do you all have an Echo or a Dot? Are they very different?
Can I connect to my iPhone with a Dot or just the Echo?
Please enlighten this iDevice user.

I have been wondering if I need one now or not. I do plan to have my new house set up with the proper lights, doorbell, and garage systems so that I can control it all, but I don't really want to invest in that stuff in this house right now. But, with it being half price, I am tempted to just go ahead and get the Echo now and expand things when I get moved. I can see people needing one upstairs and one downstairs since it looks to be pretty convenient. Or is that what the Dot thing is for? I'm not buying a 2-story, so it won't apply to me, but I can see how others would be jumping on this price to get another one for their upstairs.
