I have an Ipad Air and I love it, I also have an Iphone so they go together. If I was getting something for a college student I would probably look into a Windows Tablet so you can use a flash drive. That is just my thoughts though.

Find out what the college requires or suggests. My initial thoughts are that an iPad would be a great toy, but not practical for classes. However, I haven't had to deal with that yet!

I would be curios to know what the college suggests. I still think of Ipad as more of a toy lol. I do use it for fundraising stuff but I often feel like the windows one would be better.

Weighing in as a traditional student. I have an iPad mini, and I love it. I use it both for school and just as a toy at home. I just keep it in my backpack, and I don't have to lug my laptop to campus all day for one class.
A lot of times, especially with English classes, they want us to have the reading with us. I'll do it in my book when I'm at home, and pull up it up online or as a pdf so I have less to bring with me. It's good to make notes on and send emails, as well as pull up documents for reference.
Now to be honest, I could do without it if I really needed to, but I'm glad I don't have to. It let's my keep my backpack down to my planner, one shared 3 ring notebook, and my ipad for the most part. It's very convenient to have. But it can be abused in class, just as a laptop could be. There are pros and cons. As far as specific I pads, I prefer the mini, because even with an Otterbox, it's still small and lightweight

I was listening to a report on the radio about this. experts recommend a laptop over an Ipad because the student can type more effectively and efficiently on a laptop than an Ipad.

They actually have wireless keyboards that connect via bluetooth so you can still type traditionally with the ipad. I plan to get one once I find a good deal on one used. Just throwing that option out as well.

At DD's school they recommended NOT using an iPad but rather getting an Android tablet as a secondary device for the simple reason you can't watch Flash videos on an iPad and some of the homework sources are still in the dark ages LOL. Most of the kids have laptops so not sure how many even use the tablet for homework.

I started school with an iPad and bluetooth keyboard and quickly learned that the content I needed was flash based so I had to get a laptop.

I have 2 in a high school that requires ipads (it's private they can do that!) Anyhow their only recommendation was not the 1st version because some apps wouldn't work. Considering the fact that eventually you eventually can't get the latest ios on them at some point i'd always go with one of the latest versions so they don't outdate quickly.
ds has the full size ipad and dd has the mini. Both are happy with their choice.
I have a college student also and he was required to have one. Their recommendation was the full-size ipad (this was last year.)

My twins just started high school in a huge public school. Over 4000 kids. They gave EVERY ONE of them an iPad Air. When the whole school is on them and every class is tailored to use them, it isn't a problem at all. It sure beats lugging around the heavy backpacks my older two had at the same school.
Definitely check with the college.

Both of my kids in college said the iPad would not work for them. It would be fine for fun/social media, but they said they would use their phones for that.
They needed laptops.

I have an IPAD air and a wireless keyboard. It is easier to carry with me but for typing and stuff a laptop would much easier.
