My daughter is going to do some data entry for a client of mine.
In the past I figured what it would cost to have me do it.. and my boss has paid her just slightly less than that.
So this is different as she will be working with my client's admin person to get the job done. So I don't know how many hours she will put in.
Minimum wage in NC si 7.25 an hour. So I'm thinking of saying $7.
Does that seem fair? I think if she hired someone to do the job they would probably charge 10-15. And I know the admin gets paid more than that.
Curious as to what the peas think!

I'd think minimum wage at least. Most data entry jobs around here are about minimum wage, and since she's a teen with (presumably) little to no experience, I wouldn't expect her to get what a more experienced person would make.
They could always pay her a bonus if it gets done quickly and/or extremely well.

They should pay her minimum wage. Even though she is a teen she is still working and the company/business she is working for will need to follow appropriate state/federal labor laws.

I don't even see how they could get around minimum wage.
If it's a job they would normally pay someone $10-15/hr and she has little experience, I would think $8/hr would be fair.

Unless there is a separate minimum wage for teens in your jurisdiction, your teen workers should get at least minimum wage. And, I would argue, if the work the teen is doing is something that would pay an adult worker higher than minimum wage, the teen should also receive that.

At my office, if one of our teen kids comes in to help out, they are paid $10/hour. (Min wage here is $8.90) My boss is very generous and her kids are some of the teens who have come to help out.
(I'm assuming that he is hiring her as temp labor and that her wages will remain below the threshold for filing a 1099)
Also, I would think the employer would set the wage, not the mom! :-)

Will the income be reported?

The minimum wage does not apply to people under the age of 18 in NC. At least that is what someone told me. (client is confirming)

The problem with this is that there are three people working on it and my teen is in Driver's Ed so it could be that she does a lot of it or a little.

I'm another who believes $10 is a good going rate. But let's say your teen is willing to work for less? I'd still do $8/hr. Heck, she can earn $7/hr babysitting!! Or at least I hope!

What is the motivation to hire a teen?
Offer the opportunity for experience at reasonable pay?
Or try to get something done as cheaply as possible by taking advantage of young people desperate for money?

I'd say minimum wage at least. I'm in Alberta too, I wasn't sure what the increase schedule was. My DD16 just picked weeds for a farmer for $15/hr. She's helps mow lawn at the ball diamond for the last couple years and makes $15/hr. She cleans vehicles and people will give her $40-100 for 1-2 hours of work - mostly for lazy single oilfield workers . She just started at the gas station for $12.50/hr.

Minimum wage here is $8.90. In our office, we pay teens (always kids of employees) $10/hr when they come in to help with data entry, filing, shredding, etc.

We usually pay $10/hour for temp labor helping around the office doing odd jobs that nobody wants to do. My grandmother's office did the same when I was younger. I would work about 8 hours a day boxing and moving files at the end of every year to make room for the new year. Of course, working for her meant I got free lunch and got paid for a full day the last day no matter how long it took so I had perks.

Why would you Nickel and dime over $.25? Why discount her because she's a teen? If she is doing the same job an adult would do, don't minimize her contribution because she's a teen. To me it goes along the lines of paying less because someone is female instead of male. Pay her more than minimum.

If it's only 5-10 hours of work, make it worth your DD's time to take the job. I'd say $10/hour is fair. I wouldn't do data entry for $35-$70 at the end of the job. She's a teen but her time is valuable, too. If it's worth it to your client to hire someone else to do the work, they should pay a fair rate for the job.

She just wants to get the job done quickly and needs a little help to get it done. My daughter is happy to help. She is not desperate for money and she would never get hired at a "real job" at 14 in our town, baby sitting jobs are even hard to come by. She enjoys earning some money and is quite happy with whatever she gets paid. I just wanted it to be fair.

They should pay her what the job is worth. Can you discriminate based on being a teen?

I would say miminum wage at least.
FWIW. Here in California minimum wage is $10.50 per hour. Increases to $11 per hour on Jan 1st.

At least min wage.
My 15 year olds have been helping out at my office over the summer at $10/hour. The place my older daughter works pays high school interns $9 and a few dollars more for college interns. (They also have free dorms available for college students and bring in lunch for all employees every day. It's a pretty sweet gig!)

$10/hour is what a local business pays our students too which is above minimum wage. Our minimum wage is $7something

I would say at least minimum wage. There's no reason to pay less and the difference for so few hours is negligible.

I thought minimum wage was the law? When I was worked student summer grants we made minimum wage. Is this under the table? That might be different.
Not sure what age has to do with salary. What does your boss pay 34 year olds vs 25 year olds? I figure you get hired to do a job and are paid whatever that job description normally gets. Maybe have your daughter check with HR?
ETA: Most places I know that hire students for short summer employments have that salary information already in place.

Why would they pay her less than minimum wage??
THATS what minimum wage jobs are supposed to be for, people starting out.
