This always crack me up in movies. Every time they show a freeway traffic jam, you hear a cacophony of horns blaring. Who sits in standstill traffic and hits the horn? I noticed it a lot in the opening scene of La La Land. You know, where they get out and sing "Another Day of Sun". NO one honks in LA. Or anywhere around me. Except maybe if someone isn't paying attention when the light turns green, and then you wait a polite second or two and then you lightly tap the horn, really quick just to give them a head's up. I can never find my horn when I DO really need it, to warn someone from hitting me. I always wind up hitting the steering wheel on the wrong spot, and then AFTER the little episode is over I find it, and then it's too late. . This is universal, right? I don't know that I've ever paid attention to that whenever I've traveled.

Boston is the only city I've lived in where they absolutely honk in traffic, even if it will do no good. I lived there during the Big Dig and basically you heard continuous honking at all times day and night for several years.
New York honks more than LA, but not as bad as Boston.

No, I'm like you, I honk so rarely I have to find the place to push on my steering wheel

to everything you said! I've been in plenty of traffic jams and no, there's no horn honking going on. Like you, the only time I hear a horn is if someone is sitting at a green light, or if someone is driving crazy. Is NY really like what they portray in movies with horns honking all the time?

Only if some idiot is grid locking and could easily pull into the lane next to them to free the intersection.

No. I very rarely honk, but, I will if the person in front of me at a light is distracted, and not moving (Yes, I give them a couple of seconds to realize, before honking, unlike some.), or if someone comes into my lane, unknowingly.

I only honk in emergencies, like someone trying to change lanes and they don't see me, or something like that.

But not in standstill traffic.

I tap honk at people not paying attention at red light so they'll get off their phone and drive. I honk like hell at red light runners. We have way too many serious accidents because these idiots don't stop.

I've never been stuck in traffic but I can't imagine honking. I only honk when I drive by someone and want to wave at them -- small town life

I think I've only beeped my horn once in the last few years.
Waiting at a set of traffic lights that only lets about six cars through before turning red again. Big junction, takes awhile for the lights to go green. Guy in front busy checking his phone. Lights go green, he doesn't move, I beep, he looks up, moves and makes it through while me and the car behind have to wait until the next turn.

I only honk when someone is sitting through a green light. Or, when some moron pulls out right in front of me (when they could have waited for me to go by as there was nobody else on the road). Then I honk, then get pissed off as my horn will only blow so long and then stop when I feel that it should blow longer. LOL

Not in standstill traffic but my horn and I are very well acquainted. When the light turns green go, stop playing on your phone. No you can't just cut me off. Please look before you do make a turn. The right turn only lane is not for you to fly up and cut people off. The stop sign is not a suggestion. Ughhh....and the list goes on aND on.

I commute 1.5 hours each way to a Boston daily traffic is horrific, it is rare to hear a honk. Unless someone doesn't move when the light changes.

Boston has improved a lot since the Big Dig has finished. A ton, really!
I rarely use my horn.
My Dad used to tell a funny story...he was driving and stopped at a light and his car stalled and wouldn't start. The guy behind him kept honking and honking. My Dad got out and walked back to the honking guy and told him that he'd be happy to honk for him if the guy would get his car started for him.

I may have exaggerated a tiny bit but rush hour is horrendous, a lot of people really do sit there and honk even though there is no where to go! Save

I don't get the horn honking in stand still traffic either. It does nothing and is extremely irritating. It does happen in Manhattan but not all the time and it seems once one jack ass starts, 5 more idiots start at it.

Glad to hear Boston has improved. I still remember my first time out there in the early 90s. Trying to leave Logan and traffic is horrific and horns, horns and more horns! I wondered what exactly they thought they were going to accomplish by honking and figured it must just be stress relief. I love Boston though - it's been way too long since I visited!

I rarely use the horn and sometimes find the spot to press only after ? has happened.
My sister taught me a phrase. "horn whipped" She was in a funeral procession and some fool cut into the line and so she "horn whipped" him for it. hahahah
(Actually her using the horn in that situation is probably not a good idea. The funeral procession was turning off the highway into the gates of the cemetery and the person just cut through.)

I noticed it a lot in the opening scene of La La Land. How funny! When I saw the thread title, the first thing I thought of was "Like in LaLa Land?" No, I don't honk my horn while sitting in traffic, what purpose would that serve? Nor do I hear people honking horns...except when someone is about to hit them or cuts them off.

I honk my horn pretty much everyday because I live near a one lane tunnel that sits at a 3-way stop. It's essentially a blind intersection, although there's a mirror hung there to help out. Traffic is supposed to alternate coming through the tunnel - just like a 4-way stop. Anyway, everyone generally honks as they're about to come through the tunnel to warn cars on the other two sides. At night, we just flash out headlights though.
