Only when somebody is going to hit me. That^^ or maybe a short tap when someone is still sitting at a green light because they're looking at their phone. SaveSave

I noticed it a lot in the opening scene of La La Land. How funny! When I saw the thread title, the first thing I thought of was "Like in LaLa Land?" No, I don't honk my horn while sitting in traffic, what purpose would that serve? Nor do I hear people honking horns...except when someone is about to hit them or cuts them off. Oh! haha! I wondered if anyone else thought that was SO weird! And then it kinda annoyed me because I thought 'I hope people don't think we do that out here..". And I don't even know why I cared, lol.

I just got a new car on Tuesday and this thread is making me realize I don't even know here the horn is on the steering wheel yet. Well, shoot, I don't know how to operate half the buttons in it yet either. Lol.

I was just in Seattle this weekend and had to pick up my DD after a concert and was stuck in traffic. People were honking like crazy. Cars were blocking intersections so cars would honk when the light turned green like they would magically move. They do like their horns in Seattle though, I've noticed it moreso downtown, not so much on the freeway unless you are about to get hit. Same in Spokane. Light changes and you wait too long, you may get a friendly honk. My kids like to use the horn a lot. Before they started driving they would tell me "honk at them" if the car was going to slow or something they didn't like haha.

The only time I honk my horn is if someone has not noticed that the lights have gone green and they're just sitting there. Or if someone hasn't seen me and tries to move over into my lane and it looks like they're going to side swipe me.
When I visited my dad in Saudi (second time I've mentioned that on a thread today!) the drivers were insane. The very second that the lights went green, every single car hit their horn to make sure the driver in the front of the line knew it was time to move. Literally the split second it went green! It was so funny.

I live off a very windy road. I drive with my hands at 10 and 2 and my forearm on the horn. People are INSANE. They go around blind curves on the wrong side of the road. There have been deaths and serious injuries from idiots driving over the yellow line. I'm super cautious.
But otherwise, never. And certainly never in traffic.

I just watched La La Land last night and at the beginning of the movie when everyone is stuck in traffic and honking I wondered the same thing! I've never seen/heard that in real life. Honking just adds to the annoyance!

I was very tempted today- I couldn't figure out why the right lane wasn't moving and couldn't get over because everyone else was going around. When I could finally see it was because they were waiting to turn into Krispy Kreme to go through drive through. Must have been some sort of deal today- but it pissed me off. Holding up traffic to get doughnuts- just park and get your lazy butt out...

Nope. Never. It's so silly. How would it possibly help? It just adds to the noise pollution. I agree that I never see it in real life, either.

Emergencies, or when someone isn't paying attention. Honking in a traffic jam would serve no purpose so I wouldn't bother.

I have never noticed this in spokane. [/quote] I meant that in Spokane it's just friendly little honking unless someone sits too long at the light. I worded it wrong:)

I honk at the deer crossing the road, or not crossing, or crossing or not. They can't make up their minds NOR will they hurry when I know I have seen them leap over a fence. Then I honk as do my neighbours and other people. (We are not that deer friendly here.)

No, I would like to not be shot. Ditto. Though I do notice that a fair amount of people honk the few seconds before the light turns green. Like I'm supposed to blast through the last few seconds of red light to get a head start. Or they'll blare their horn, if goodness forbid, I stop for a pedestrian and don't just run them down. Because, you know, the car behind me getting to it's destination 5 seconds sooner is more important than a human life.

no honking here, just a little tap if someone is distracted. if there is a traffic jam and someone starts leaning on the horn, everyone is craning their neck to see what the heck is up with the loony driver! what good is honking? its not going to get anyone out of the way any faster. now on my honeymoon in jamaica, there was a whole language of honks, honk at the intersection, honk when you pass another tour bus, honk if the goats get to close, honk for a pretty girl, etc, etc.

actually, i *do* honk a certain way when i see friends of my kids on the street or people i know. it's a little staccato tap tap tap.
everyone knows it's me, even as i come up behind them now! my DD hates it because she says "mom, all the other drivers are looking around to see what is up with the loony driver". lol!!

I was in Miami for the last week, and they love their horn there! My hotel was downtown, near a drawbridge, and I was kept awake a few times by people honking their horn. I'm not sure why they thought honking would make the drawbridge close, or where they wanted the car in front of them to go. SO annoying.

When I went to grad school in Boston during the big dig years, honking was my hobby, lol. It's not nearly as bad now, but if I hear a honk anywhere in the greater Boston area, I'm not surprised! Lisa B.

How odd that we have such different experiences. I haven't seen Lala land, but LA is the only place I've witnessed people honking at nothing. It really really annoys me. They act like children just venting their frustration.
I also walk quite a bit and people are always honking to encourage the car ahead of them to hit me. I guess they think the person is on their phone and never consider the driver is pausing for a pedestrian.
I'm in west la. Where is this magical place with no honking?😆

I honk, but only if you are a stupefied moron on your phone unknowingly at a green light because you're an entitled asshole.

I very rarely get stuck in traffic (tiiiny town), but it doesn't happen much in larger towns either. So it was a bit of a cultural shock when we visited NY
