Get all the family dirt, gossip, medical history and funny stories you can. Anything you've wondered about over the years, make sure you ask. My mom's been gone 1.5 years and I still have this automatic response of "ooh, let me call mom and ask" when I wonder about something in our family history. My mom has always been secretive, keeping some pretty awful family secrets. She has never told us her father committed suicide, for example. She lied and said he had heart disease. She has some memory issues now and has actually told us a few things that were pretty shocking about her aunt and grandmother. I don't know if her memory issues have made her forget they are secrets. I am working on getting more out of her, LOL.

Why they had me and why the hell didn't they give me up for adoption? I totally get it. Sending big hugs.

My mom is alive, is my best friend, and we talk every single day, multiple times. But I'm still finding things out about my family that I never knew. Some is shocking, some is funny, some is useful. She stole money, jewelry and property from him and he never did anything. Even my mom's sister didn't know.

My uncle sat down with my Great Grandma when she was around 93 and asked her a bunch of questions and taped it. Some of the stories that she told to this day still crack me up.. She died in 1998 at the age of 99.
I wish I would have asked my Grandma and Grandpa more about their lives. I spent every moment possible with them, but never thought to ask them as I was only 16/18 when they died.

Thanks for all of your replies. I can't even "like" them all individually at this point, as I'm leaving tomorrow for three weeks and am behind in everything due to root canal and a chipped crown on a different tooth as well as evacuating due to wildfire threat. Back home now but ugh...
I appreciate all that you have shared. Thank you!

It has recently occurred to me that I never knew what my parents were fighting about. Or more specifically, why my mother was so insanely furious at my dad all the time.

Anderson Cooper and his mother wrote emails back and forth about topics he wanted to know about. They wrote for over a year, I believe. They both turned it into a book. She was such a wealthy child/adult (Gloria Vanderbilt) that I am sure the stories were very much a surprise to him.

Her mother was very judgmental, which led my mom's aunt to do something that destroyed her life.
