I went to urgent care Monday night because of my horrible cough. Took x-rays of my chest to be sure that I did not have pneumonia. Negative for pneumonia but I do have bronchitis.
They gave me a shot of Rocefin and Toradol and script for doxycycline plus codeine cough syrup and an albuterol inhaler. Towards the end of the day on Tuesday, I called back to see if I could get a breathing treatment because my cough was still horrible. I was exhausted from all of the coughing and have bruised ribs from the severity of the cough. They called me in a 7 day pack of prednisone.
As of tonight...I have finished day 4 of the antibiotics and day 3 of the prednisone and I am still coughing severely. Now I can feel junk rattling in my lungs when I take deep breaths. Do you think a breathing treatment will help?
I am going to call the urgent care in the morning if I still feel like this. I don't have a fever, but I want to make sure that I am not developing pneumonia.
Seriously....this cough is exhausting!!!

((((Hugs)))) My daughter had bronchitis in late May/early June and she was still coughing into early July...I would say it took a good two weeks for her to be over the worst of it

I used to get a horrible cough every year that would last for months!!! I did several rounds of both antibiotics and steroids. None of it worked. I went to see my NP friend and she said, "you have allergies." I was like "yeah. right."
I decided, "What did I have to lose?" She gave me an Rx for some flonase and xyzol (zyrtec family) and within 48 hours I was cough free!!!

Have you tried any oral meds? In my practice, I see that some people respond better to Claritin but not zyrtec or allegra. I'm sure you already to know to stay hydrated as much as you can, too.
sorry you are going through this. All that coughing was exhausting

OH! And what about an inhaler? That might help to open you up and get all that congestion out!

I am using an albuterol inhaler with a spacer. My first time to use a spacer with an inhaler.

I only have had bronchitis once and it is miserable! I seemed to get the most relief from the inhaler.

I have COPD so am very familiar with bronchitis and those miserable, rib-cracking coughs. I haven't had it for quite awhile but when I have, my pulmonary doc usually puts me on mucinex, along with all the other antibiotics and cough suppresants. It almost always helps break up that congestion that's causing so much of the cough. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to try it. I know how miserable you must be feeling and hope you start feeling better real soon. Hang in there, girl...

Get the cough syrup with the codeine in it Im serious. When I had multiple rounds of bronchitis that was the only thing that let me sleep at night and allowed me to rest up for the day of coughing up smurfs as we call it in our family. Im so sorry you are not feeling better

I sure feel for you.
I had bronchitis twice, starting in April, that turned into pneumonia. I have been coughing for 4 months and I am over it.

I had bronchitis about a year and a half ago. I went to the emergency room, because I felt like my throat was swelling/closing(very swollen lymph nodes). I refused a Zpak, because it makes me so nauseous. I had been taking Mucinex Severe Congestion Relief(it's a liquid in a bottle), do the Doctor recommended I continue taking that, as well as Flonase, and Vicks Vapor rub(I put it on my chest, neck, back and feet). I was also given a prescription for prednisone.
Hope you feel better soon.

I got tested for whopping cough and was positive. It's a long coughing season until it clears up. I still cough and that was over 7 months ago. Hopefully the cough syrup will help!

I'd skip the urgent care and get in to see your regular doctor. I'm very biased against urgent care facilities though, because I feel like they just throw antibiotics at everything and send you on your way. I know there are regular doctors like that, too, but I choose to see a doctor who only prescribes them when there is a real reason to.

Just got home and I am right on the edge of transitioning from bronchitis to pneumonia. I got another shot of rocefin in the hip and a z pack on top of the doxycycline that I am already on. I have been coughing since last Saturday.
If I have any bouts of shortness of breath or if I am not any better by Sunday morning then I will have to probably be admitted to hospital. This sucks. I have never had stitches or broken a bone.
Ugh. The cough is killing me. I am even trying the Vicks rub on my feet. DH is beating my back with his cupped hand to try and break up the mucous in my lungs. I am drinking Airborne for my immune system. Taking hot mustard baths. Taking Mucinex DM. I just want to not be coughing any more.

I'd skip the urgent care and get in to see your regular doctor. I tend to agree with you. My family doctor's office closes early on Friday. It was the urgent care or the ER.

I'm glad you went for a re-check. I was going to suggest it and then I read your update. I've been hospitalized for pneumonia a few times. It's not fun. Are you doing nebulizer treatments? That can help stave off the hospital. Crossing fingers that you avoid the nasty hospital.

Are you doing nebulizer treatments? No nebulizer treatment....which is curious to me as I thought this was normal protocol for clearing up lungs. I might reach out to my family doctor in the morning and go over the course of treatment that urgent care gave to me. All I know is that if I still feel the same on Sunday morning as I do right now....DH is taking me to the hospital.

I have a long history of asthma and bronchitis. When I do get it, my doc loads me up on longer acting antibiotics ( z paks are worthless), mucinex (generic is fine, I get mine at the dollar tree) a once a day allergy tab, and tessalon pearls. The pearls are a god send and will get you some relief. Good luck! Sometimes a nebulizer is neccessary, and can really kick the snot out of you!

Expert bronchitis suffer here who had pneumonia in March. My doctor gave me Cefdinir 300mg and nebulizer treatments. Z-Packs don't work worth a damn for my bronchitis.
I hope you can get some relief today.

I know I'm late to this game. And I know the cough is ANNOYING! But the cough is good. You want the cough. You want to cough all that crap up! The Mucinex loosens the mucus and make it easier to cough up. You must drink a CRAZY amount of water for the best results. And when you get a good loogie up--spit, don't swallow. Take the Mucinex 2x daily until the cough is completely gone and then some. Cough suppressant will fight the Mucinex. They cancel each other out. My doctor always tells me to only take the cough suppressant (which doesn't work when I'm really sick anyway) at night or when I really need to rest. Sometimes, the cough gets worse before it gets better as your body works to get rid of the crap. I know it's exhausting. I'm sorry.
