"(CNN)Actor John Heard, best known for playing the father in the "Home Alone" movies, has died, the Santa Clara County, California, medical examiner's office said.
The medical examiner's office said the actor was 71, but other reports list his age as 72. He died Friday."
According to TMZ:
John Heard, the beloved star of several huge 80s and 90s movies, died Friday in Palo Alto, CA ... TMZ has learned.
Heard was found dead in a hotel by the maid service ... according to family sources. Police were called to the hotel for a report of a medical emergency, but he was pronounced dead on the scene. The coroner is investigating, and cause of death is unclear at this time ... but police do not suspect foul play.
We do know this ... according to his rep, John had "minor back surgery" Wednesday at Stanford Medical Center, and he was staying at the hotel while he recovered.

I was just watching a re-run of an old Law & Order Criminal Intent, where he was a guest actor on.
He was such a good actor. Sympathies to all who knew him.

He was a good actor and will be missed. Does anyone remember him on The Sopranos? Damn he was great in that part.

One of my all time favorite movies is "A Trip to Bountiful" that he was in! He was a great actor.

I always liked him. So sad to hear he is gone. It said that he had some kind of minor back surgery and was staying in a hotel as he recuperated.

In our house, we always imitate him mocking Tom Hanks "I don't get it, I don't get it" from "Big." Really liked him and his acting. Sad.

There was something easy going about him and it never seemed like he was acting; it was flawless. I enjoyed the sound of his voice too.

I really liked him too! Never watched Sopranos so only knew him for Home Alone which we see 6 or 20 times a year so I was always a fan of his - I do think may have seen in guest star or smaller parts in other things though now that you are mentioning Law and Order and other movies though - seemed like a nice guy, it's sad the way he died. I mean any way is sad but this seems very sad, sounds like he was alone and it was clearly unexpected.

When my son was about 6, someone gave him the Home Alone movie & he became obsessed with it. He wanted to watch it everyday! The entire family memorized every line of that movie.
We still enjoy watching Home Alone when we are together during the Christmas season. It'll be sad watching it this year.
