She must be either pregnant and craving it, or really wealthy. Here in Tokyo they're $17 each Apples are 99c each this week instead of $2 like last week so maybe she's splashing out with the money saved!

I was more or less thinking 'so what?' when I read the thread title because I buy at least that number when shopping.....then I saw the price of the yoghurt!!! That is the equivalent of over £10 a tub here!!

$17?!?!?! That's insane! I go through a ton of the stuff. Well, I guess I wouldn't if I lived in Tokyo!

ExDH bought me a $100 melon to eat when I was expecting. My friends all joked it was for his son. It was good but not $100 good. Say for example, Japanese white flesh peaches are huge and sweet as candy. They are that good. I would rather buy 10 boxes of them instead of a melon. But it was a status thing for him to do in front of my sister.

Yes, it's true! In fact it was 1728 yen at the international supermarket. Totemo takai desu ne! I hardly ever go in there because I can't believe the prices. I can live with regular Japanese custard style - $2 for a large pot:)

That is a crazy price, but honestly? If you want something bad enough, you'll pay whatever it costs. I buy foods that are crazily priced because that's the only thing that will do for whatever purpose. If I was in Japan and I wanted yoghurt, I would pay that. Greek is the only kind of yoghurt I like and the custard version (which I've had and think has a nasty texture) just wouldn't cut it.

If a product is not indigenous to or produced in a country, that's pretty typical. I'd hate it though because I have a cup of Greek yogurt with honey and flax seed most mornings for breakfast. I guess I'd be learning to love a new breakfast food!

I guess Greek yogurt in Japan is the equivalent of Kobe beef here in the US? I would be willing to work out a trade except I don't think it would be possible to ship the items each way. sigh.

People will spend anything for trendy bullshit! Like it's some sort of status symbol.

I really like Greek yogurt with granola for breakfast. I like it much better than regular yogurt. If I had the money I'd buy it too.

So was that $17 for the small 6 oz container, or for the big 32oz container? Either way, that is crazy! Hope they last her a while (or a least until the next payday)!

I buy the huge Costco tubs, and coincidentally buy three at a time because I don't go to Costco too often and I can definitely consume 3 tubs before the expiration date. I have mine with honey and GrapeNuts or AllBran cereal sprinkled on top. I wonder if the woman was super wealthy and thought nothing of the price? And I'm still wondering what size pot it was.

I agree that sometimes a person will pay whatever the cost if they really want something.
And I'm also wondering what size a pot is?

That is nuts! It is so easy to make at home. My favorite strainer for Greek yogurt is to line a rice washing strainer I bought at the local Korean grocery store with a coffee filter. Otherwise, all you need is milk and 1/2 cup of plain yogurt that has live cultures and either a crockpot and oven or a yogurt maker.
