Last month a former student contacted me on FB and asked me if I could attend her 20th high school reunion. She was in town and wanted to touch base. I had her as a fourth grader in 1988. She was an amazing kid and of course I remembered a lot about her. So today I went to meet her at their second day of the reunion at a park. It was just like talking to an old friend I hadn't seen for years. She is a chemist in Chicago and doing just fine. So amazing to see her all grown up (at age 38 ). When she started telling me about her brother, she reminded me that I had told them that I grew up in Omaha and went to school in Lincoln and where her brother lived was close to my dorms. That kid had an amazing memory, for sure. So I just wanted to pass along to all of the teachers and school employees who will be going back this fall to remember that you do make a difference and that kids will remember you and what you say for years to come. I know that beginning of the year is stressful with changes (too many) and added responsibilities for kids who might not have the support they need at home. Your class size, room, and grade level really don't matter (in the long run). What the kids really remember is the relationship you have with them. Best of luck in your new year!

We had about 5 or 6 teachers attend our 45th AND 50th reunions in NOLA. I guess they were much younger than we thought they were at the time. It was wonderful chatting with them 50 years later. One of our teachers was writing her memoirs and her computer crashed and was not fixable. We took up a collection and bought her a new laptop. She was thrilled.

I know it is getting close because I am dreaming about lessons plans and organizing my classroom.

Truly, one of the best parts of my job is when I get an email or a phone call that go, "Hey, do you remember me? Could we meet for coffee?" I'm always amazed at how easy the conversations are. You are right, it is just like talking to an old friend!

I'm a retired 2nd grade teacher. I'm amazed at the number of former students that have found me on Facebook and sent me messages. The one that was graduating from college that told me he heard my voice when he was struggling, telling him not to be afraid to try, that he could do it, that he was smart. The one that told me that 2nd grade was the only time she ever liked school. The one that said she hated school and cried every morning - until 2nd grade. The ones that tell me that they are teachers now... because of me. You make a difference - every day. You may not see it or feel it, but they do. Hold on to that when times are tough.

I'm actually excited to go back this year. Don't get me wrong - I'm enjoying the vacation time, too, but I just have the feeling this is going to be a very good year!

I'm not ready yet - but we didn't get out until the third week of June, and our kids don't come back until after Labor Day, so I've got some recuperating time left. I will say that I have moved from "OMG thank God it's summer!" to "I'm not quite ready to go back, but I wouldn't die if I had to go back next week." The next phase will be getting excited - I'm just not there yet. We have some exciting changes at our school for the fall, so I do look forward to what will happen.

I go back Tuesday... not full time, thank goodness, but three days next week, then four days the week after....
I'm pretty much in full panic mode. Can't believe it's time to go back already.
