I think with furniture you can't have both cheap and quality in the same piece. You have to decide which one you really want. There is a lot of junk furniture out there and futons in particular take quite a bit of abuse.
Personally I'd say look for something built by the Amish. We bought an Amish built bedroom set before DD was born and it's rock solid, made of real hardwood with dovetailed drawers. A lot of the other stuff we looked at was so cheaply made that we knew it wouldn't hold up. Even though it wasn't the absolute cheapest, it will definitely last. We decided our time and the hassle factor of replacing it if it fell apart was worth something too, and we only wanted to have to buy it once.

No such thing as a cheap and comfortable futon. I hate how they look and function. Al the ones I've ever used have been uncomfortable to sit and lay on.

I agree sally! but unfortunately this is for dd's 1st apt, and probably all she can afford at this point. Remember your 1st apartment? and what you had for furniture? This is a just starting out phase. Not a I'm buying this to pass down stage.

What's the goal in buying a futon? To use as a sofa? To have a spare bed for occasional guests? Or is she going to sleep on it every day?
There are plenty of cheap sofas, even ones that fold out into a bed, that might be a better value and probably just as cheap. I'd look online: Wayfair, Joss and Main, Overstock
Cost Plus has a futon that is raised with arms that fold up so it's a daybed/sofa. I know someone who has it and it's held up well and is quite comfortable. Studio Day Sofa

Basically as a sofa. She is in an apt, one floor up. It's straight up stairway, narrow hallway. We thought this would be the easiest thing to move up there right now.

My boss bought her dd' s from Wal-Mart for I think about 200 bucks. Somehow she ended up with a second one, which is being stored at my mom's house until ds needs it.

What about buying a twin size mattress. Then buy a day bed frame from craigslist? Or use pallets as a base/frame.
In my opinion, futon pads on much thinner and not as comfortable to sit or sleep on, for the long term.
