I have looked up about what can go on carry one and I think it is ok to take copious amounts of candy in my carry on, but my husband thinks I should pack them. Frankly, I don't have a lot of room in my suitcase and I don't want them smushed. Are they ok to carry on or will I lose them at the airport? And by copious, I mean at least 40 candy bars and a few bags of chips. Also, I think I declare them and my jellies at customs, right?

You can carry them on with you. The jellies will need to go into checked luggage though (I'm pretty sure jelly can't be carried on, anyway.)

Declaring them depends on where you're going. Some countries will ask about food items, some won't - Canada & the US, yes. Either way, they're fine in carry-on (unless, by 'jellies' you mean jam-like stuff, in which case check them).

Depending on what airline you are flying some now have weight limits for carry on cases. If you haven't already go to that airline's site and check the baggage restrictions. I'm used to flying international so this might not apply if you are flying within the USA. But better safe than sorry-I'd check it anyway. I carried lots of gummi bear bags home from Germany and chocolate bars. I couldn't fit them in my suitcase either or my carry on. I ended up putting them in a fabric shopping bag (like a tote bag) and just boarded the plane with that on the way home in addition to my carry on. It was a very small tote bag. No one said a word. It was a big amount of the big bags of Gummi candy and it ended up weighing quite a bit.

Thank you all! The jellies/jams are in the suitcase. The candy doesn't weigh a lot, just takes up a lot of room! The grocery store had Aero bars on sale, I totally stocked up! I am flying from Canada to the US.

I am flying from Canada to the US. Mostly air, then. Yes, declare the food items. We got threatened with jail time because we hadn't put a protein bar on our customs form and mentioned it to the US customs officer as an after thought. The kicker was that we were still at the Toronto airport at the time (flying into Houston, if I remember correctly). Yeah, he was a dick.

I will totally declare the candy, jams and even the cat treats- I don't want to get in trouble or lose my yums!

You will be clearing USA Customs while still in Halifax. There is an agreement between the two countries. You will land in the domestic area of the airport where you are landing. Then you will go & get your bags and on your way home.
Glad that you liked the grocery store, Sobeys. They are clean and have a good selection of products.

Sobeys was great, all 3 we visited were fantastic. I was sad not to find the birthday Froot Loops, but I made up for it in other treats. I am pretty sure the other people shopping thought I was insane taking pictures of all the food, but of course they were too polite to say anything! The way you cheese is packaged is very unusual, and your canned biscuit dough is packaged sideways compared to ours, such a random switch. I think it is terribly unfair you guys can buy Cadbury mini eggs all year long. I am also terribly jealous of the cute bear on your peanut butter jars. They are completely random, but so cute.

I just flew from Canada to the US two weeks ago.
I'm a Canadian living in the US, and I always bring back a lot of candy! Mint Aero bars, Crispy Crunch, Coffee Crisp, and my personal fav - Wunderbars! I usually put it all in my checked luggage. I've never had it damaged. I don't think it'd be a problem in your carry-on though.
This was the first time ever I was asked if I was bringing back food. I just said a few candy bars, and that was all anyone said.

I am sorry you weren't out west. On the Island we have a chain of grocery stores bought by Sobey's and they are really great stores. I haven't been in a Sobey's but our store called Thrifty Foods is really awesome! I have two near me and love shopping there! It's the best!

Okay, gotta ask - how is your cheese packaged? Ours is in bricks, like at least 4x4x8, yours was like 1x12x4 I think. Yours was like one really thick and long cheese slice. Just different, weight seemed the same.

Yes, but typically a bit thicker. We even have something called a "baby loaf" which is twice as thick and costs much less per pound.

Just different, weight seemed the same. Ugg, I don't like those skinny cheese rectangles, you can find square cheese you just have to know where to shop. IGA carries that skinny stuff. I like the 4x4 square cheese, Kraft Cracker Barrel is like that. Customs/TSA is funny, they say you have to declare your food and then you check the box and they ask you what you have so when you tell them it's granola bars, candy or whatever they dismiss you and say that doesn't matter. But you don't want to get into trouble not declaring it in case they check.
