I made myself a Goodreads' New Year's challenge to read 75 books this year, but the Song of Ice and Fire series and the Outlander series derailed me because they are so darn long. I'm trying to make up a bit of time by reading some shorter books. Right now I'm reading Winter Solstice by Rosamunde Pilcher. It's the first time I've read any of her books. I like it. She's a great storyteller and wonderful at character development.

I read them before I started watching the series. I haven't read the last one, though because I wanted it to be fresh in my mind when GRRM finally gets the last book out. But I'll probably go ahead and read it to keep up with the series.

Just finished Top Secret Twenty One by Janet Evanovich. Total fluff and nonsense, but I still enjoy her books. They're not great literary works, but they make me smile and have a happy-for-now ending, which some books totally lack. I'm a sucker for a happy ending :-)

I am sure Batya will join, but if she does not, I would be willing to start a reading thread on Sunday each week. I do hope she does it instead though. I usually read at least one book a week, but I love how she routinely reads two or more a week. It is definitely her thread, and I hope she continues it.
I'm just a sad contingency plan.

I read Mud Vein by Tarryn Fisher for my book club. The cover looks like it's going to be mommy porn, but it's far from it. The book has an interesting plot, but too much was unbelievable and didn't make sense. When you finally found out "who did it" at the end, you were just left scratching your head. I would not recommend.

Hi there, checking in...
I've read this week: Mark Greaney's "The Gray Man". Good thriller, a little implausible at time but will make a good movie.
Carl Hiaasen "Strip Tease". Good, light, fun. Which I needed after
Harriet Brown "Brave Girl Eating" about a family's experience with anorexia.
Stephen White "The Last Lie". Good, apparently nearing the end of this series. I still like Jonathan Kellermans Alex Delaware seizes better though.
Happy we have a new home - thanks admin!!

Based on both some comments on the Reading thread and a recommendation from an IRL friend, I read her The Shell Seekers last year and really enjoyed it a lot. I'm working on a series of YA Historical Fiction novels set in Russia, right now the one I am on is Burying the Sun, they are by Gloria Whelan.

Thank you for this offer! I was going to like your post, Careyayn, until the last sentence. I am sure batya will be here - I haven't talked to her, but I just think she will show up! However, you would be a far cry from a "sad contingency plan." Lisa

I see Minima and I were posting at the same time regarding CareyAyn....

I have a rather large stack of books on my summer reading pile. After finishing The Fault in Our Stars, I decided to try another of John Green's books. I'm currently reading Paper Towns. Definitely not as much of a page-turner.

I did read two books in the last week. I took on the fluff book Sixth grave on the Edge. That's always a fun series, but I am getting slightly annoyed with the narrator's voice. I kind of hope she starts to finish this series up in the next two or three books.
I also finished Feedback. It was only 99cents on Amazon. It was a sci-fi mystery. I did like it, but I didn't love it. Good for 99cents though.

I am reading The Far Pavilions by M.M. Kaye for bookclub this month and loving it so far. It is an epic story of which I am about half way through it.
For my morning walk, I am reading the YA novel, Catherine Called Birdy by Karen Cushman and enjoying it as well. I walk when I read in the mornings, and The Far Pavilions is simply too big to carry and walk briskly with.

I just finished the abridged version of The Count of Monte Cristo and wished I had picked up the unabridged version. Lots of missing pieces, but I still enjoyed it!
I also burned though Roses by Leila Meacham and the sequel, Somerset. They are historical fiction/family sagas in a similar vein to Gone with the Wind. Easy to read, but not completely predictable.
I'd love to join in on the book club if that gets running. I've always wanted to join a book club! The closest I get is reading book reviews on Amazon and Goodreads.

Leanne, I would love to know what you are reading. I love the titles you all pick for book club. My problem is my library isn't very up to date, so I usually read them later than the rest. But love the ideas!

It is romantic but thank heaven it's not cheesy because I really hate cheesy and weak women characters. I love the strength of the characters and how they think about other people and how their actions could affect them. I need to find a copy of The Far Pavilions because I love it enough to want a copy in my library.

I just finished The Goldfinch. I didn't love it. Bits of it were OK, but it was just so darn long and dreary.
I'm currently reading a YA book called Ruin and Rising. It's the third in a series. I'm about 18% through it and it's good so far.
I have Mrs. Poe on my Kindle, so that will probably be my next book to read.

Has anyone contacted Batya??! OMG! I LOVED the Far Pavilions book. Read it so long ago! I should read it again. Seems like whenever I re-read a book though, I don't like it as much. So maybe not. Rosamunde Pilcher is also my most favorite author. Loved everything she wrote.
