I shopped at a Charming Charlie's recently and picked up some costume jewelry for an upcoming trip. I'm pretty conservative when it comes to jewelry and wear mostly a small variety of "real" jewelry. So with the sets I got at CC's, the hook style earrings had the little plastic "stoppers" on them. Are those just to keep them on the card in the store or do most people use them when they wear the earrings? I can't believe I am as old as I am and have no idea the answer to this question! Haha.
Thanks for enlightening an old lady.

After losing many earrings over the years, I've started wearing those things with every pair and haven't lost an earring since.

I do not wear them. I will pinch the wire loops so they are tighter and have never lost an earring.

The rubber backs are to be worn, they aren't just to hold them on the card. I don't like them, I feel they don't have enough give, but they do keep the earring on... to the detriment of my ears.

You know, I got to thinking after I posted this... I bet the answers end up being split down the middle. Lol.
But it's interesting to hear what people do and why.
Thanks for the replies so far!

When I first started wearing those kind of earrings I used to throw them away. I would pinch the wires closed but I would still loose them. Now I use the plastic backs. I wear dangly earrings (non expensive) my favorite place to find them is Catos I don't pay more then 6.00 a piece so at least if I loose them it doesn't hurt to bad. I love Cato's earrings!

I always wear them, in fact I bought a small bag of about 200 at a craft store so I always have them on hand. without them, hook earrings wiggle their way out of my head within a half hour! even when I pinch the hooks shut I lose them. I must move my head really vigorously ha.

I have a couple of pairs of lighter weight earrings that need the rubber stoppers or they fall our of my ears. Most times, though, I don't use them.

I have some very lightweight earrings with the hooks that I have to wear the little rubber stoppers or I will lose the earrings without even knowing it. I have extras too.

I wear them. After losing way too many earrings I decided I needed to or else stop buying that type of earring .

I only use them if the earrings are lightweight and tend to shift around.

I learned the hard way that I should always wear them. Bought a few pairs of earrings that came without them, and lost one out of each pair. I really liked those earrings, too.
Your post is a good reminder for me. I've gotten in the habit of wearing my one set of good jewelry everyday, even when I travel. I wear it all the time, just take it off to sleep and shower. I haven't done any fun travel since I started doing that, just work travel, so I need to remember for my two upcoming fun trips to leave the good stuff at home and bring my costume jewelry again.

I always keep the clear plastic backing, but never wear them & haven't lost an earring yet (knock on wood).

Between having a short neck, typically wearing a scarf either as an accessory or one for winter, I have lost so many earrings I can't even count anymore. These rubber backs have made a world of difference. I even use them on my better earrings that may not have come with them.

I wear them but push them up behind my ear so people don't notice them. Too many lost earrings here too.

This old lady didn't realize those were for the backs to hold the hooks in place until well after I was 40. I resisted purchasing hook earrings for many years because I couldn't seem to keep them on my ears and got tired of adjusting them all day.
They really should post instructions for us less able to figure out the "obvious". LOL!

Well, although the jury still seems somewhat split on this issue, I think I'll opt to wear the plastic stoppers on the hooks. I think my longer hair might make them more prone to fall out. Not to mention since we'll be on vacation, I may be drinking many adult beverages while wearing them... so a little extra "insurance" can't hurt!

I was always losing those earrings too, until my 8 y/o DGD (at the time) explained to me I was supposed to use those little plastic thingies when I wore the earrings! Haven't lost an earring since

I wear the stoppers, usually near the bottom of the wire (not right against my ear). I have lost earrings when I've worn them without the wire.

Most of my earrings are from garage sales, and very very rarely do they come with the little rubber/plastic backings, so my guess would be that few people keep and use them. Even if I do happen to buy a pair new, or receive them as a gift, I don't use them.
I wear earrings to work every day, and have a physical job that involves a lot of lifting, bending, etc. and I don't recall ever losing an earring.
I suppose if they were constantly falling out, or I had lost one/some that I really liked, I'd start using them though!

I wear them to stop them falling out, because they do fall out at times. I wear them near the back of my ear in the same way as I would wear the "butterfly" stopper on stud earrings to hold them in place.
