My die-cuts are a hot mess. I don't have a designated spot for them and they are all over the place. I don't really know how to organize them. I have started by pulling them all out and trying to sort them into categories. I'm keeping the ones that go with specific collections together instead of breaking them up, but I'm a little a clueless on what to do with the rest. I have divided some into themes like summer or travel. Some of the more generic I have sorted by color. Do any of you have some great ideas for die-cut organization? What do you store them in? I want to make sure I'm using them and what I'm doing now isn't working for me. Help!!

I've been thinking about this lately. Over the weekend, I sorted my papers by manufacturer and collection. So I think I am going to go through my die cuts and sort them so they can go with certain collections. So dark reds, blues, yellows would probably match something from simple stories and maybe echo park. Pinks and teals would go with American Craft lines, etc. I don't know if this will work but in my head it makes perfect sense.

Right now, i dont have too many does. I keep then stored on old promotional fridge magnets. I several have magnets advertising sports schedules that are 4x8ish. I will consider gluing business card sized magnets together if I get rough dies that I need more storage! Eventually, I'll fix them to a cork board or something, but in the mean time, it's a pretty unobtrusive way to contain them.

What size are you die cuts? I keep mine in 5 x 7 photo cases (plastic Iris) by theme or line. If I have the line of paper, I keep them in a baggie in the bag that holds the paper.

I've actually just changed mine to colour as I've found myself thinking by colour thanks to the BYOK challenge here. I have my colours sorted into the 4x6 photo cases shown above and have combined similar colours (like yellow and orange, or pink and red, or black, white and silver) into one case. I've tried sorting supplies by colour before but other than brads it's not a method that has worked particularly well so I'll see how it goes this time.
Prior to this I had mine split into two categories - things with words and things without words. I don't have a massive stash of them so that worked for me for a long time. I usually found when I was putting pages together I instinctively knew if I wanted more words on my page so it made sense to how I looked for supplies. I stored them in two small open containers so I could rifle through the contents easily.
I only have two theme categories - Christmas and Travel - which are stored in the theme drawers. Everything else is mixed together.

I do the iris containers too.
I don't do by color but I took several AT and put them together and the same with Maggie Holmes. I made one for labels, tags, tabs, Polaroid frames.
Newer ephemera packs hang on my embellishment clip it up as the case is full.

my die cuts are stored by color in DVD cases along with all other embellishments like brads, clips, labels, stickers it really works for me because I think "I need something YELLOW over here" not "that MME floral die cut should go here" Like Chinagirl828 I also separate out Christmas and Travel

I don't think I have as much of a stash as some of you do.
I keep all my die cuts, stickers, and other ephemera in a couple of shoebox sized photo storage boxes. They're organized, file fashion, into themed groupings (baby, winter, school, etc.) and generic groupings (hearts, flowers, journalling cards).

For instance if I needed a yellow die cut I probably wouldn't put a Amy tan one on a Maggie Holmes spread their styles are too different.

I have Iris cases for my theme items, whether die cuts, stickers, flair, brads - whatever.
Non-themed items are sorted by type - washi, enamel dots, flair, etc.
Leftovers are in small, clear boxes by color. I cut apart mostly used sticker sheets or chipboard. Then, like others said, if I need something yellow, that's where I go.

I just have them in a couple of bags on my clip it up, unless they're with a kit.

Maybe I should have listed this in the Organizing Regrets thread....
Currently, all of my Die Cuts are in piles to be taped onto cardstock sheets and stored in a 12x12 binder, sorted by color. It's going super slow, it's super tedious, and I may never finish.
The IDEA is for me to be able to go "shop for a color" and find something that works. Have I mentioned tedious?

I keep die-cuts in the collections they came in but put them in these cases. I like them because they use less space than DVD cases. I also include a pic of what's inside on the spine since most ephemera packages have that on the back of the package. http://instagr.am/p/BUDV8lcDFey
This storage has worked better than anything else I've tried. And I've tried several. LOL.

I started doing the sort-by-color thing. I found it works better with fewer diecuts. Once I had most of mine sorted by color, I had so many that I would have to dump out the entire container to go through them and find the ones I would use. That got to be super-tedious (to use your phrase). I found that sorting by the package works much better for me. I will dump out the whole package but it's less to dump. I was worried about whether I would be sad about not sorting by color, but the fact that I have a thumbnail on the spine (see my photo in my post above) helps me find the boxes with colors I might want to use. Just an option you might try if you are frustrated with the current one.

I ended up sorting by color and theme. I'm storing them in ziplocks and keeping them all in a metal small lunch box like container. I don't have a really large amaount so it's working for now. Any packs that I have that go with a collection I am keeping separate until most of the collection is used up.
Thanks for all the suggestions. The Peas are the best!

Thanks thracian. I need to parse this project up a little, and sort them all by color FIRST. I haven't been able to use any in months because of the project status....I think if I can sort by color then I will at least be able to break it up and feel some accomplishment. Right now I'm in the never-ending abyss of a giant shopping bag chock full of "giblets".

Then, I cross off each die-cut I use. Not sure it's my system yet bc all the baggies are just standing up in a little box and I have to go through the entire box still to find the right style/color/size/etc. maybe a clip-it-up system will work better for flipping through...

I use a Sterilite 3 drawer mini unit.Top drawer holds die cuts (and punchies) that I've made. Middle drawer holds store bought diecuts. Bottom drawer holds different things at different times. Right now I have clear photo overlays with white scroll designs on them in there. The mini unit definitely limits how many diecuts I can hoard. This is a good thing.
