I had to use foam on the clear side or I couldn't get a good impression. I also had to use foam on the rubber side even though my stamp had foam. I couldn't get a good impression otherwise. It feels too thick but it didn't work well without it. I tried a wide variety of rubber stamps that had their own foam. I did not need any foam to get a good impression with any of them. Were you using solid stamps? Or line drawing type stamps that you hand color the stamped design? If you have this trouble even with line drawing type stamps, then I think you should return your Tonic. This was a large background stamp but it wasn't solid. It was all line art. this one.

I finally had a bit of time to play with mine last night, so I got out some 6x6 backgrounds. One was rubber on cling, and one was clear. Relieved to find that both of them stamped just fine - I did have to restamp the clear one once, but discovered that I had one of the magnets on the bottom placed too close to the stamp. Didn't need to use foam for either of them (whew!) I do stamp on either a wooden table or a wooden desk, which I think makes a difference. I know at a 10-for-10 back in the day, there was a stamp that gave half of us fits and the other half had no problems - the problem group was working on plastic tables and the others were on solid wood. I know it makes a difference for me. With normal stamping (using a block, not the platform), I get much better results when I use a wood table. The same was true when stamping with my platform last night. I tried three different tables. The plastic table was a fail, while stamping over the leg of my solid cherry table worked the best of all.

This was a large background stamp but it wasn't solid. It was all line art. this one. Mine is not made by the same company, but it is somewhat similar, and I tried it. It stamped first time in the Tonic platform #1. I placed it at the bottom, because it seemed too thick to place near the top. I placed it at the top on the Tonic #2. I had a spot that was not quite as well covered, so I stamped it again. It did get better coverage. That stamp was thick, even for the rubber side. I do not have any stamps from SSS, so I don't know how the thickness of the foam compares to yours. Mine seemed really thick. Oh, and I made sure I used a wood table, not plastic.

I have the UK platform and have been very pleased with the results. I've got good impressions with clear and cling stamps and stamping in various posititions. Recently I've started using my clear stamps with thin fun foam on the rubber side of the lid and that works even better.

I'm pleased so far. I've used both rubber and photopolymer with and without foam underneath the cardstock I'm stamping. I prefer the images I get without foam actually. I'll try a background stamp tonight and see how the results are.

I just received mine today. And I have to say that I'm pretty happy with it. I only had a chance to play with it for only about 15 minutes or so, but based on some of the replies above I was a bit worried I wouldn't like it.
For clear stamps I tried a fat sentiment stamp (praying for you) and the solid YAY! speech bubble from MFT. A unicorn from Mama Elephant, a fine line sentiment from Mama Elephant.
For rubber stamps a SU! un-mounted orange slice and a scripty happy birthday rubber stamps on EZmount. The SSS Gingham background stamp. A TH rubber coffee mug blueprint. A Hero Arts Lines background.
I had a bit of an issue with the background stamps not getting a complete image the first time, but it was easy to re-ink and CPR press in the area that was light. I did not use any extra foam, nor did I think it needed it.
I used Neenah 80# cardstock and SSS premium dye black ink. And I just slipped a full sheet of paper and left it there while I stamped on all areas.

Just updating. I emailed tonic and they replied quickly, asking for pictures. I sent them almost a week ago and never heard back.

I just got mine last week and tried it out with several stamps. No problems. I have some big background stamps I'll try this weekend. If I have problems I'll try inking the stamp with a brayer to get the ink distributed. That's worked In the past.

If anyone is still having problems using theirs, Tim Holtz uploaded a YouTube video yesterday showing tips for using it.

I sent tonic a message via Facebook and they're sending me a new one. They want me to do some tests on both before I send back the original.

I tried a large background stamp--5"x4"- and it didn't work. This one was rubber with foam so the problem was that the lid couldn't quite close. This isn't really that big an issue for me since the platform works well for my othe stamps. The larger ones will just be relegated to my acrylic blocks.

Reading on SCS they are getting g replacements from Tonic and offers to assist from customer service. Fortunately my TH stamps perfectly. At least they are trying to remedy it unlike when nothing was done when people had cracked Mistis and were told it was their fault and had no recourse. I think that is the difference in dealing with a large company that has cash reserves and a basement company operating on a shoestring .

A thought for when your stamp is thick......make sure you're on the "rubber" side. Maybe flip the lid and see if that makes a difference. I know when I'm stamping a large image I will roll a brayer over the lid. That gives me better inking, a more even image. If the image needs another inking then I'll do it.

I had a small cling stamp, used the rubber side of the platform and found that the lid wouldn't close properly either. I moved the stamp from the corner of the platform to the centre and had the same issue. At the end of the day the stamp did give me a clear impression, but it doesn't "feel" right, and maybe I'm just being finicky, but I have to admit that I didn't ever have an issue like this with my Misti (and I'm not happy about saying this). Somehow I expected the lid to close "properly" but it doesn't.

I use the EZ Mount cushion so the whole thing was almost 1/4 of an inch thick. I tried various placements and I just couldn't get the whole image to stamp. It was kind of an intricate design--a fine lace pattern--so that may have affected it as well.

The variance in stamp depth can be pretty wide even within the same stamp company. I have been unmounting all my wood mounted stamps and putting them on EZ mount cling foam. Some of the stamps are almost paper thin and some are very thick. The fact that my regular sized Misti has a very bendable door seems to make up some for the too thick stamps but I'm also concerned I might end up with cracks again if I put too much pressure on it. My TH door doesn't have that kind of give so although sturdier it doesn't bow and always catch the whole image on a very thick stamp. I've also noticed a few of my remounted stamps have low places in the middle. Restamping usually takes care of it. I've never had much luck on any platform using a page full of stamps at the same time. There's always one skinny one that misses.
