My partner was gifted a book called "I Dream A World" from a special aunt when she was a young girl and we just recently tracked down a couple copies to give as graduation gifts.
It was published in 1989 and Maxine Waters is featured on page 36. I think that makes her 51 but my math could be off
I found these two quotes especially cool:
"Older black women have always been so helpful. I think that if the world is ever going to change, that's who's going to really do it."
"Black women are going to have to take more leadership I think we are prepared because we bring a tenaciousness with us. We do not fear losing friends allies or jobs"

I agree with you olan. The black women that I am lucky enough to call my friends have a strength and character about them that I greatly admire. They are loving, passionate women. They are dynamic. I also think the woman I know have a confidence about them that is unshakeable and they do not fear losing friends over their opinions. My one friend, in particular, is a natural leader. Her faith and confidence inspires me. I have gained much from being her friend.

My favorite residents over the years have always been the older black women. They love to share their experiences and are ready to impart their wisdom. Plus....Ms. Ruth made the best greens in the whole wide world! I had one of my older black residents who used to always ask to see my feet. She loved my fun colors that I always got for my pedicures. I loved her so much. She was the one who taught me to keep a warm coke ready for heart burn. Works like a charm! |

I find that when I am in the company of people who look like me conversation will naturally go to politics or things we feel we can only share with each other so as a result I really cherish my more lighthearted friendships. My hobbies have also placed me in mixed crowds and I know my life is richer for it. |
