I'm searching my library's e-book collection in preparation for vacation and see they have plenty of Maeve Binchy books. I've never read her stories, but know she has plenty of fans. I would like to try one, but I don't know where to start. What is your favorite Maeve Binchy book and why?

Circle of Friends was the first one I read and I was hooked. I've since read all of her books, but that one still stands out. Tara Road also.

I can't really pick one, I love all her novels. I've never read any of her short story collections.

I really don't like her style of writing, it seems really depressing to me.

I like her early ones best, such as Echoes, Light A Penny Candle, and The Glass Lake.

I like her early ones best, such as Echoes, Light A Penny Candle, and The Glass Lake. Those are the three I would have mentioned as well. Circle of Friends after that. I didn't like her books set in modern times nearly as well.

I like her early ones best, such as Echoes, Light A Penny Candle, and The Glass Lake. Light a Penny Candle was where I learned to pronounce Aisling I might be misremembering, but I feel like I read that Circle of Friends was semi-autobiographical, which is why she didn't like the ending when the book was made into a film. She appeared at my university back in the 80's, so I went to see her even though I had never heard of her because student tickets were cheap. She was very tall, and I remember her telling of working at a newspaper where her caption "a hearty Irish stew" mistakenly appeared under a photo of open heart surgery. I used to call her books my official airplane reading material because I found it so easy to get caught up in her stories, even when I was uncomfortable and frequently interrupted.

Circle of Friends is a great choice. My vote would be for Light a Penny Candle next, if you like historical fiction. I love how she often introduces a character from a previous book in another book. It makes me feel that there is a friend in a room full of strangers - until I get used to the strangers and they all become friends. Not many writers do that.

Love them all - you can't go wrong. Light a Penny Candle was my first, I think. They're all awesome.

...Light A Penny Candle... This was the first non-kid/teen book I ever read. I really like Maeve Binchy, and don't know why I haven't read her in so long.

Love MB, can't pick a favorite, I do re-read most of them. If you like Maeve B., another good author is Rosamunde Pilcher.
