Peas who have gone to Marshall, or had kids who have gone to Marshall, tell me what you liked and what you disliked.
We are going for a campus visit in a couple of weeks and are spending the night in Huntington - any must-eat-at spots? Any places we need to see?
Marshall University is one of the colleges & universities that is offering support for students with high functioning Autism. They have a program for student with Autism that they can apply to, after being accepted to the University, which will help support them in a variety of ways to ensure that they can succeed at college. We are very excited to visit and my son is applying for 2018.

We visited the school with our son a few years ago. Small town and campus. Students and staff were friendly on the tour. My son interviewed for the autism support program but wasn't accepted into it. He was accepted into Marshall, however. Seemed like a great program! Not sure how many they accepted that year, maybe 12? Had about twice that interview. If he had attended, wasn't quite sure how we would get him back and forth to Northern Virginia, other than driving to get him. Could be a train that goes to Huntington. He ended up at another school that didn't have as much support as he needed and is currently back in my basement. Kind of wish he had started locally at George Mason.

We are in NoVA too. And if my older son doesn't go to Marshall, he will most likely go to Mason. We are also looking at Kent State in Ohio and Western Michigan - both have Autism programs too. What school did your son start at? My son has been in FCPS since he was 3. He now is mainstreamed completely, except for extra support in English. He has passed all his SOLs, so will get a standard diploma. But, he has severe issues with life skills, and also is so impaired in gross and fine motor skills that all work is completed on a computer - he cannot write.

I haven't visited so I can't answer your questions but what a wonderful opportunity. I'm sure you've been asked this a million times already but have you watched "We Are Marshall?" If not, you should definitely make time to do so!

DS wanted to study aerospace engineering (!) and went to Florida Tech. He loved the independence, just couldn't keep up with the work! He was also in FCPS since 3, with a brief stint in Department of Defense schools in Europe. Passed all the SOLs and managed to get an advanced diploma, but did have some support with organizational skills and in English. He writes great essays, once he can finish them! Time management is difficult for him. He's in a baking and pastry program now and doing ok, but I know he would still like to earn a degree in engineering or computer science. Hoping your son finds his path!

I haven't been down there, but live in WV and my stylist is from Huntington. I was talking to her about Marshall and she said she'd never send her kid there because of the drug (meth) problem in the area. Some quick googling has pulled up evidence of that, but I don't know how the issue there compares with other cities.
Just my anecdotal input 🙂...

If he ends up at Western, try to get him into the new dorms. They are beautiful! And he had better love lake effect snow!

I have also heard that there are some severe drug problems in Huntington. I would think that college students might be targeted, and there is little to do there.

If not, you should definitely make time to do so! Dh and I had watched it when it came out. We actually just watched it again with ds last night. DS loves football, so was riveted to the screen for the whole movie.

We own the house that my dh grew up in in Romney, WV, so we are familiar with the drug problems throughout the state. Meth is an issue everywhere in WV, due to the poverty. Yet one more reason that abolishing the Health Care Act would be a disaster. Anyhow, ds#1, due to his very rigid adherence to rules and the law (common in autism), isn't a high drug risk, so that doesn't concern us as much as if he were a typical college student.

They are on a campus in Vermont and at university of Wisconsin Madison and support students on the spectrum. A former colleague of mine is the academic director in Madison. Great program!

Elaine, Anything you want to know PM me. My husband and I were born and raised in Huntington. We both graduated from Marshall. The people mentioned in the movie WE ARE MARSHALL were friends of ours. Very sad time for our whole town. All of our family still live there. Our nephew is a lawyer in Huntington and a WV House of Delegate. Very involved in the city and they are tackling the drug problem. We now live in Florida but in Huntington frequently. As far as sending a kid to school there I wouldn't think twice about it. My husband and I are in the medical profession and worked there for many years. We only left there for a great opportunity with another physician in Florida. Let me know if I can help.

My parents were born and raised in Huntington but moved to Pennsylvania after they got married. We spent a lot of time down there through the years. Marshall is a pretty school-it's very near the downtown area. I wouldn't have had any reservations about any of my kids going there. I think you will find drug problems anywhere, unfortunately.
The people in Huntington are very kind and welcoming.

We had a great time at Marshall! We ate at The Peddler - YUM! My son loved the tour - even though it was pouring. And the meeting with the Autism Program was great. Fingers crossed that he is accepted. My husband and I both loved all that they had to offer in terms of support, and my son loved all that Marshall and the town had to offer.
