What an incredible adventure and a great experience for your boys too spending time growing up in such a beautiful, natural environment! I applaud you for your adventurous spirit and even though this isn't your dream, you've been exceptionally generous giving up everything you have for your husband's happiness. Hope he knows what an amazing wife he has I have to admit living in a tropical environment like yours is my dream too. I adore snorkeling and love the sea. I'm sure your boys will have a ball living so close to the beach! Please keep us updated as you settle in with photos and how things are going for you. Curious minds want to know more-so we can live vicariously through you

Best of luck to you! Even though I love tropical climates I'm too old and set in my ways to ever do anything like that.

How amazing! That is such a beautiful location. I always said if I could figure out how to get licensed to practice law in Honduras, I'd be a beach lawyer in Roatan.
I hope your transition goes well and wish you the best!

We did much the same but moved to Morocco. I took 10 years of life in our house and compressed it to 14 big Rubbermaid totes that we shipped and we carried 8 suitcases on the flight over. It was an incredibly difficult task but liberating all the same.
We are now four years in. There have been moments of homesickness, but I now cannot imagine living somewhere else. I would say the first six months are the hardest.
Let me know if you ever need someone to commiserate with!
I hope your family has lots of exciting adventures!

A friend of mine, a physician did a medical mission to Honduras w/her entire family. I'll bet your Neo-natal nursing skills could come in quite handy. Wishing you lots of happiness in your new home.

Wow - that is so exciting! I wish you all the best in your new life adventure! Please post pictures and keep us updated on what life is like there. I've never heard of this area and know little/nothing about Honduras. Off to google.
You're going to want to come after you Google it! You're right, it looks like paradise!

I go to Roatan at least once a year, usually more often. My last trip was May and I will probably go again in October.
My sister bought a beach house that's on CocoView Resort. She goes down for 3 weeks at a time about every 2 months. She rents the ground level of her house and the upper level is private, which means I always have a place I can stay.
Send me the name of your restaurant and she will definitely stop by next time she in in Roatan.
I love it there. I quit diving after 30 years several years ago due to health reasons, but I still enjoy snorkeling there and just being on the water.

What!?! How exciting! We cruise to Rotan - when we go back I am gonna have to look the restaurants! I dream about living on the beach - though I doubt it will ever happen as our whole family lives here. So jealous for you!

I know one of the owners of Dunbar Rock dive resort off Roatan. He and his business partner purchased a hyperbaric chamber for the local hospital. that's amazing!

They've never snorkeled before, in fact my oldest hated the beach, and they are loving it. The reef is just gorgeous here. Untouched, unlike the Great Barrier Reef or any reef in Hawaii. It's amazing.

These are the restaurants my husband will be running. I have only Scuba dived once, but we plan on getting our certifications. The snorkeling is amazing enough, though. So beautiful.

My best advice is, "Let it go." Seriously. We had a severe limit on what we could bring because we were bringing everything on the plane with us as checked baggage/boxes or carry ons. Our furniture wasn't worth the cost of shipping it there and we were movng into a furnished rental, so there was no point in keeping it even though we loved it. Your situation may be different than ours, we were forced to get rid of pretty much everything. It was so hard but in the end, for us we knew we would be able to replace or improve upon everything we were giving up so it made it easier to sell our favorite things cheap or give it away. We helped furnish homes for 3 families in need. I can't count how many times people were so thrilled to buy our things that I had realized weren't giving me as much joy as I thought they would. The purging was very liberating when it all was finished. And we only had 3 weeks to do it! I'm so impressed! I'm trying to let it go. I'm a former teacher (and have 3 kids), so we have a ridiculous number of books - I'm having a very hard time letting go of those. Other than that my fabric (I sew lots) and my scrapbook stuff (haven't scrapbooked in forever - very overwhelmed in trying to sell all the stuff I have collected). I wish I could pay someone to go through everything for me and figure out the donate and sell for me! There did come a point where I wanted to rent a dumpster and just throw everything in lol. I sold a lot of things on facebook and we donated a lot of furniture to families in need. In the end, it really felt good to donate everything.

scrappysurfer, what an exciting time for you! DH very much wants to move somewhere in Central America, or possibly South America. I'm very hesitant. Over time I'd so appreciate it if you'd talk about things like renting a home there (cost but also amenities; how are homes different), food availability and cost (are you eating differently there?) and health care. I have major health issues, so I can't be anywhere that doesn't have good health care. But I LOVE tropical weather and beaches. My dream location would be Maui, but it is way too expensive. Off to google Roatan, since I have no idea what it is like. beaglemom, bear in mind that the vast majority of UK homes are much smaller than US houses. When deciding on furnishings, imagine them in a space half the size of the current room. I believe beds in the UK are different sizes too; at least they used to be. The UK is very expensive, London particularly so, but you are probably used to that since you are in California. Refrigerators are almost always much smaller, but most things aren't stored in the fridge (British eggs don't need refrigeration; there was a whole thread about this a while back). I wish DH would get a chance to go to London for a few years; I haven't been back "home" since 1987. Way too long! Please keep us updated about your new life. I'd love to know where you end up living, what kind of housing, what you think of London, if you find the people friendly . . .everything!

OMG I am SOOOOOOOO jealous!!! We spend a lot of time outside of La Ceiba (mainland Honduras for those who don't know) and I would move there in a heartbeat if it weren't for my kids & my mom. Love love LOVE it there!!!
And you're so close by ferry to a bunch of the other islands. I keep hearing really good things about Cayos Cuchinos and Utila. Worth a day trip to each from what I hear
So lucky!!! I'm really happy for you!!

They've never snorkeled before, in fact my oldest hated the beach, and they are loving it. The reef is just gorgeous here. Untouched, unlike the Great Barrier Reef or any reef in Hawaii. It's amazing. The first time my son snorkeled was at the age of 8. We went to St. John USVI and spent two weeks there camping at the luxury Eco campground Maho Bay in tent cabins(sadly it's gone now). DS has always loved the water. He was snorkeling out in the middle of the ocean during this trip off of a boat, and off the beach with sea turtles. He already knew how to swim and I got him private lessons with a swim instructor on how to use the snorkel and mask before we left home-that way he hit the beach knowing how-saved me a lot of frustration. We've been back to St. John again but have never visited Roatan. I've heard of it, but haven't explored it as a vacation destination. If the reef is that great I'm going to do that seriously. I've heard so much about reef's dying lately and it's so sad. 2/3 of St. John is National Park and is protected is one of the main reasons we enjoy going there. I'm so happy for you and your family! I was homeschooling DS when we were vacationing in St. John. One thing I did was get the plastic fish identifier cards and I'd have him write down every fish he saw and how many of each after every snorkel. He actually loved doing it and it wasn't very long before he could identify them all by name. Maybe an idea for your boys depending on how old they are?
