I wonder if you can help me on this. We received a cheque today from United Airlines to compensate us for damaged luggage. It is in dollars. Annoyingly, they have made it out to me, and not my DH. He has a US bank account, I do not. Will I be able to endorse it on the reverse, making it payable to him? Or can I score out my first name, change it to his, and initial it as though the signatory has amended it? The cheque says Mr. Lesley surname, and also has our full UK address on it. It is handwritten. It will be a real pain to get them to reissue it; it's taken long enough to get them to send it in the first place. I'm in Florida in November, so I would like to take it with me, rather than send it. However, I won't be able to go to the branch where the account is held. if it makes any difference, the account is with Chase.

Can you just sign it and put it in your regular acct? The bank isn't going to know who actually signed the check, nor do they really care. I wouldn't wait until November--if you put into your regular acct, surely they will just convert the currency?

To endorse it over to him, on the back, write 'pay to the order of 'husbands name'' Then sign it underneath, then have him sign it underneath your signature. They all have to be on 3 separate lines. Then he can deposit in his acct. they are a bit different here in the US.
Don't cross anything out anywhere.

You should be able to endorse it over to him on the back of the check. That's what we would do with it here.

Why can't you deposit it into your own bank account? Wouldn't the bank just convert it automatically?

And as we pay fees to send deposits electronically to the US account, it seemed prudent to deposit the cheque there, thereby saving two fees!

Just deposit it in his account. No one is going to notice/care unless you claim there is a problem.
Signed, Bank employee

You sign the back, he signs the back and deposits in his account. Easy peasy. Sorry about your luggage!

I agree, do not change anything on the front. I bank at Chase and have never had issue with this method.

OK if you can go to his bank you can sign the check as yourself and put it in his account. You do not need his permission to put money in his account. I actually do this all the time. For my kids and for my nieces and nephews. It was a quick way to get money to them when they were away at college. I go to a branch here with their account number and put a check in, they go to their branch by college and viola money is in. If the check is made out to you, you sign it then put it in with his account number. I guess if he isn't going to be with you you can have him sign it just in case but I've never had that happen. (mind you I can not cash a check against their accounts but I can deposit. )

I am a teller. You sign the check on the back, then write "Pay to the order of X (your husband's name), then he signs under that. Do not alter the front of the check AT ALL since you are not the maker of the check (United Airlines).
